I was walking back from the library tonight and my mind was wandering. I started thinking about the journal I used to keep, and how I've abandoned it... and now I do most of my writing and thinking online -- predominantly here.

I know websites don't last forever... and I was thinking that it would be a downright dirty shame if we were to lose all the conversations we've had and posts we've made if this site goes down.

Is there anyway to backup and download text iterations of the SnarkPit? I don't know exactly why yet, but maybe years from now I'd like to go back and read what I've written and laugh at myself for being different / the same.

I know its possible to export online journals, but is it possible to export forums?

Theoretically / Practically etc?

Am I the only one who would want to keep a record of a place like this? Would it be too big to even save?

Open up a .txt

CTRL+C the text, CTRL+V in the .txt

Of course you can. You'd have to have a output script for MySql ... or PhpBB ... whatever backend Lep used here, export that ... and then you just save the five php pages that make up this site and all the folders with the media in them. Done.

Then when you want to replenish it, use a load script for whatever database you're using (They exist) ... copy stuff to the proper directories ... make sure you set the database up with certain values (you'll have to redo the 2 lines that tell the php pages where the database is).

The only thing that'd make it difficult is if you wanted to change databases. Like ... going to Oracle from MySQL would be a pain in the ass, because of the code, in php, that talks to the database.

But, yes, it's possible, and quite easy.

If you mean for a general user ... no ... hard. Something that could be done, however, if people really wanted it, you could write a page that compiles everything in the database into chapters with an index and everything, then converts it all to a pdf. That'd be cool ... "Download SnarkPit, the book".

Blame it on Microsoft, God does.

I think Gwil and I discussed a similar thought once. Both of us wished we had access to Snarkpit 1,2,3 and 4.

The forums, had a very different feel than now. If I had to put a feeling upon it, it would be like comparing the pride of old in making a great map to the complacent feeling of now who love killboxes.

Snarkpit is no longer as... cutting edge.

I'd give anything to have the backup copies of the old forums.

Alas time marches on...

Well -- I guess something like Backing Up/Downloading the SP would require Lep to be around. So I guess we'll just have to wait it out...

He does more/less stay on top of things. When we lost our .com and moved here to .net, we lost almost no data as far as replies and forum postings.

He must have a record of events at his home or a safe locale.
