I took some pictures of the military base last night, some buildings etc, and I think they could make some great models for maps. How can I make my own models and textures?

And then once I get the new textures and models how do I add them so when you DL the map you get them too?

if there is a tut on this please point me too it, ty.

I started a tutorial series on using milkshape to make basic props, but I never got beyond the first tutorial image It might still be of some use to you though.

http://www.snarkpit.net/editing.php?page=tutorials&game=HL2&id=169

Other tools you may want to consider are Softimage XSI (which is the HL2 "standard" modelling package, and you can download a free "mod tool" version of it here), 3D Studio Max (which is the uber expensive industry standard), or Maya (the other industry standard). Milkshape is a simple and easy to learn program that is quite capable of creating nice environment props, but it is quite limited and lacks many of the advanced features found in these alternatives. But then, it is only $20.

Blender is good for static props. There's an export script for HL2 .smds. There are great UV mapping tools built in and I must say that once you get the hang of it it's much more pleasant to model with it than Milkshape.

Awesome Moneyshot. I was thinking the same thing in class today and I'm glad you created a thread about this, I was just thinking I had to get my head around modeling some-time or another.

Ah if only I had more time! (laments the 20 year old student )

I selected the SOFTIMAGE|XSI Mod Tool version 4.2 from the dropdown menu on that page. I can even download SOFTIMAGE|XSI Mod Tool version 4.2, but the link to the Mod Tool Add-On for Valve Source games is a 404. Anyone know what's up?

You don't need to download that mate, just open up your steamapps/source_sdk/xsi folder and you should find the addon for XSI.

But I do need to download SOFTIMAGE|XSI Mod Tool version 4.2 off their site?

You do need to download the mod tool, yes. It is not included in the SDK.

There are 3 video tutorials available from this site: http://www.iwannamap.com/tutmodels.php

It gets you acquainted with XSI, and then shows you how to model, uvmap and export a basic signpost.

I watched about an hours worth, seemed pretty helpful.

I should really be studying instead of playing with XSI, but it's like I just fell through the looking glass, and there's no turning back now...

Edit: I just had the best idea for a tshirt! Seriously...

Plain T, with "Everyone Loves a Modeler" on the front.

Normal people won't get it, but us geeks will know that its the damn truth... modelers are always in high demand (compared to mappers anyway). At least I thought it was a good idea... what do you think?

I'd go with "Everyone Loves a Coder" <img src=" SRC="images/smiles/icon_smile.gif">

Coders seem even harder to find.

Thanks everyone, some great info there, and I will look into it.

If anyone wants to see the pictures I took, I can post them on my web page. Who knows they may inspire some of you to do some great things.

You can also see one of them on my DeviantART page.

Yeah, but there's the Modeler vs. Model idea.

Ie. Everyone Loves a Model vs. Everyone Loves a Modeler

@MoneyShot, if you have any problems getting XSI downloaded, set-up, and activated I just wrote a tutorial. Just waiting for it to get approved.

MoneyShot, my modeling tutorial is up: http://www.snarkpit.net/editing.php?page=tutorials&game=HL2&id=200

That should show you how to get started installing, registering, and configuring it for Source.

Hope it helps!

Edit: Also -- if you have any specific questions dont hesitate to PM me. It's tricky getting your first model done, compiled, and in game. I literally had to get talked through the process by a guy whose been modeling for a while already.

Cool, thanks Morph.. I will do that. I honestly have not had time this week to even get started DL and all that. With St Pattys day this Friday the Base is on Operation No Tolerance and we have been busy. We are already over 70 DUI's this month.. its a record high. Thats not counting the number of fights etc that have taken place this month.
