Would you play a FREE MMO, if they had advertising in there to help make revenue?

Indeed I would. Although there are some completely free MMOs out there with no fees or spyware.

The monthly fee doesn't put me off too much - I'll only play if the game itself appeals to me, and if it is free, pay monthly, or uses in-game advertising, I couldn't care less. At the moment the only one I'm tempted by is Auto Assault, since it takes a different approach by using vehicles instead of characters (well, it has those too, but its not the focus) and uses a post-apocalyptic setting instead of the used-to-death fantasy setting. Only reason I'm probably not going to buy it, at least straight away, is that an MMO would be a very bad idea for me at the moment!

I really don't mind paying the monthly fee either, especially when I compare the fee to other entertainment I could get from the money... ie. movie tickets.
It's worth the enjoyment I get out of it, although the desire to "get my money's worth" every month is completely irrational yet compelling, so I have to be very careful about how much I play during the school year, which up to this point has been not at all. But I'm giving WoW a chance this spring...
I hear Blizzard pulls in like 66 million a month in fees, and it makes me think that the monthly fee was pure genius for them. Sure, they definitely sold less copies than they would have without a fee, but they've made that money back and then a lot more on top.

I wouldn't. Just like ReNo, it's the game itself I have to like, and since I hardly ever play even non-massive games on-line, I don't think I would enjoy a MMO game. Especially not the RPG genre which seems to be over-present in the MMO family...

I like story's and single-player games much more, and when I do play over a network or on-line I play best against or with people I know. I'm not really into getting people to know through the playing either, rather the other way around.

I don't know why people get so worked up over pay to play games. I mean
if thats whats really putting them off then they are being close
minded. Check the game out first, and if its not worth 10$ a month
(substantially less than say electricity/gas per month (although these
are emenities)), then dont continue!
Blizzard has many many deal in which you get a 10 day trial for free (long enough for someone to play and understand the game). Even world of warcraft's first month is free once you buy the game (althoug that is 30$ down the drain if you decide not to continue).
With all these fees people seem to forget they are actually paying back into the game they are playing. Blizzard makes a goal to have new content for every major patch (A 40 man raid dunegon Black Wing layer was released back in July, and now AQ was released back in December) and just now they are working on a new undead dungeon for players. So we see that we are actually paying for new content as well.

Monthly fees put me off- I don't like being tied to the feeling that I have to get my moneys worth, as I am an iratic gamer, I don't play games constantly from start to finish.

it's the combination of the fee's and lag that get me
when you have a 56k it's hard to convince yourself to pay even $10 a month to have terrible jerky gameplay and die all the time
this can ruin a great game easily

I agree with Myrk here. If I am paying a monthly fee, I feel as I have to play, and its not so much fun anymore.. more like a job.
Dont get me wrong, I do love MMO's I have beta tested 20 or so of them.. the latest is AutoAssualt.. awesome game by the way.
I just did the EQ2 trial.. and that game is not bad at all.. seems SOE got something right with that game.
Ok, so your running though a Mid-Evile city and a poster in a local Shop is promoting Pepsi.. and your ok with that? thats cool... some people feel it would ruin the experiance.
I just want to see a good Sci-Fi MMO.. PlanetSide is not bad.. but the lag in the game has ruined it for me.

Speaking of Sci-Fi MMO games I was curious about EVE Online for a while, but then I read reviews that said how boring and feature less it was.

I wouldnt mind the adds as long as they fit the theme of the game and dont stand out like a sore thumb.
Yeh I found Eve to be boring as you could set the ship to auto pilot to the destination and just sit watching it go there for 30 mins with nothing to do but twiddle your thumbs.

I think that a company could make PLENTY of money on an MMO game WITHOUT spyware if they just made like actual in-game billboards. and made some of the textures to be ads for stuff. sure it would be kinda weird to walk into a medieval tavern and see an ad for a sidewinder gamepad, but I really wouldn't mind.

There was a huge deal about in game advertising with counter-strike, because some plug-ins were running ads without Valve's permission, and obviously without Valve seeing a dime. They worked it out legally I guess, but I don't what it holds in store for Valve.
To echo what others have already said, I honestly I wouldn't mind seeing ads for Subway in Counter-Strike, as long as they were on the billboards in cs_office for example, but if they advertised in World of Warcraft for example, I'd get annoyed since its such a break from the evironment.

that'd be interesting
i don't really think ad's would be a big deal (back on topic)
i mean look at old cs, it had random signs on most of the maps with bot's names and stuff
i wouldn't mind signs at all as long as they were made to look like part of the environment
even WoW they could make em look like they were painted on like woodent signs or something
