just lost it due to their recent decision to make it cost money
now i dunno if i'm gonna get it because my senior project would have been my first map and probably would have decided for me if i wanted to continue in mapping
i probably will anyway but i need to get some cash

Eh?
Is it the source sdk you are talking about? More details please.
EDIT: I had a look around and it seems to just be a bug, probably a result of a recent patch. Some people have had a similar issue:

Don't worry, I'm sure they are not going to charge for it

Yeah, I'm sure it's a mistake ... Valve wouldn't pull a Sony ...
Would they?
Would they?
Blame it on Microsoft, God does.

If you're talking about the "preloaded" thing, just restart steam. I haven't heard anything about the Source SDK becoming a commercial product.

It isn't.
I just tried and it loaded the SDK once by double clicking, but otherwise, if Steam is open you can open Hammer by directly opening the executable. It runs with no problems.
It seems HL2:DM and CS:S have the preloaded thing next to them too (for me). Silly Valve.
Sure neough, as BVS suggests, a steam restart is in order. I'm guessing a new patch applied needed to reinitialize some constants ... which otherwise told the program (steam) that those enteries were not purchased, but pre-loaded. Anyway, not a big deal!

Or right click on them, select "pause updating", and then do the same and select "resume updating". Worked for me anyway.
