thats pretty cool.

It's good, but everything looks massively "over-bumped" and shiny.
Hang on....that's just like Doom3 then!
/runs

I know what you mean about the bump-mapping - it looks good if done subtly, but that screenshot above is way OTT!
And Doom 3 isn't much better *me also runs*
Games like Far Cry and Stalker are using it to much better effect without making everying look like its made of cheap plastic.

I'm with Gollum and Adam here - overuse of shiny shadery stuff makes things look too plasticy, HL2 with its realistic look is far nicer to me.
A game that looks really cool IMO is "Breakdown", on the xbox. It might also be a PC game but I just saw a rolling video of it on an xbox dvd and it looks really quite nice. The thing that made it stand out to me was the hand to hand combat, which for once wasn't horrendous "slap slap slap" but involved realistic punch and kick combos, that see the camera swinging about and the enemies reacting realistically.
considering the age of the engine, i think it is astounding none the less..
i agree it looks too shiny, and plasticy tho, but only because we now have seen so much better..
i am betting none of you remember the way you felt the first time you loaded duke3d either ... none of us would quantify it today as anything special, but back then it was incredable..
my question is this, can the not achieve the same looks without the shiney? i mean, it would still look good with a dull finish IMO..

Quite funny to think that Quake 1 is Half-life 2
HL2 engine is HL1 engine with a loada stuff stuck on top, HL1 was Q1 with a loada stuff stuck on top...

well, the textures do look plasticy like you guys said but the over all design looks pretty sweet in some spots.
I'll have to do a techy style texture set some time, would be a lot of fun

| Er, I thought the HL2 engine was based of Deus Ex 2 or something... |
You know, for someone who's getting the site ready for HL2 mapping, you sure do have a lack of knowledge behind the technology
.
HL2 is completely it's own engine and Deus Ex 2 uses the Unreal Tech engine. Both games however do use the Havok Physics SDK, as well as Max Payne 2, Thief III and Jedi Academy.

Poor Poor Edge Damodred...
Your knowledge of HL2 engine is poor, HL2 is HL1 that has been fiddled with, I know that for a fact from an official Bloodlines mapper.
(For those who don't know, Bloodlines is a HL2 engine game coming out next year sometime about Vampires and other stuff).

I don't think that's very likely Myrk. I'm sure VALVe wouldn't have spent 5 years revamping the same old engine. And from everything official I've heard, the Source engine is completely original. It would help if someone can find some true, valve released info about this...

The idea engine for HL2 would be to make the HL1 engine be able to handle huge polycounts and revamp the shadows, and add a lot of dynamic-light type effects.
