Today, I finally find time to look at my new MP3 player. Its really an amazing little contraption. So small and 8 gigs too.

Anyway, I have little enough experience with it to say the least.

My question: How would one go about loading an audiobook?

Audiobooks contain several disks and many mp3's all with the same designations. IE track 1,track 2.

You may have 10 disks with 10 mp3's on each.

How can I load the book so that when I press start on #1, it will be the #1 on disk #1?

Please do not tell me that I need to rename the files 1-100.

I will keep hacking at it but any insights will be mucho appreciated.

[EDIT] Update:
Stupid player. It won't even play in sequence. I loaded only one disk and it played "1-12-11-10-02"

The dumb piece of s**t must use the first digit sequencer.

Well, I have an MP3 player. The easist way to do it (I think) would be to create a playlist with each audiobook in order (this would be easy to do on a computer before you sync it with your mp3 player) then play the playlist with shuffle off.

Yeah, it didn't have a display, just back, forward, and pause (I think).

Seems like the stupidest thing imaginable.

Figured out a few things... Others still baffle me to no end.

The player came equipped with a few preinstalled songs/images.

How does one go about creating a new folder, that the player recognizes? I mean, if I create a folder "Cornwell" for the audiobook, it remains "unknown" once I disconnect the USB cable and attempt to play the book.

OK, this is still bugging me, but I have been to busy to remember to inquire further.

I have a great MP3 player, no mysteries there, but I am still having troubles with it identifying audio books.

I have several dragonrider books. about 1/3 of them load into my player, and play perfectly. The player knows that book 1 chapter 1 is not book 2 chapter 1... Follow me?

The rest of the books when loaded look like this:

1,1,1,1,2,2,2,2,3,3,3,3,etc,etc or

19,18,17.......09,08,07 ... 03,02,01,21.

The point is, I have looked in the properties of the functional books and the dysfunctional ones and there is no discernible difference.

What am I missing here? Do I need a program that puts in some invisible markers? What exactly is it that an MP3 player uses to identify MP3's?

/me is very flustered.

It's in the info of the MP3, I'm pretty sure you can alter it by using Winamp. Right click on the mp3 and click "view file info" (Or press Alt + 3)

I believe it changes the properties of the file it self so it should work in other devices.

If you're ripping them to MP3 off of CDs yourself, in the program you're using make sure you fill in all this data first, if you don't it will show up as the track number.

This is just a guess though as I don't have the player nor do I know which file is what on the player.

I know in I-tunes you can change up the ID3 tags.
you can specify what tracks are what number on an album, just like a CD.
track 3 of 10, etc... I think you can do this in winamp too.

First of all, pretty much anything computer related orders stuff that way, Orph. You always have to add the extra digit (0) to have files ordered correctly. Not sure why this is such a suprise to you ;p The easiest way to deal with this is to make sure it generates the tags properly when you rip the cd.

Did you generate the tags yourself, or from a free database? The program that you ripped them with should have the option to add the extra 0. And each cd, if you name it Harry Potter 01 Harry Potter 02 etc. should be easy to tell apart, and be in order? Or you could just put one audiobook at a time on the player, since each one is so freaking long anyway.

I use this great little program to batch-edit mp3s:

Was especially useful since it can generate ID3 tags from filenames. If the actual files are properly named with the 0 you could use that to redo the track # tags. It can also access freedb.org to name your audio files, assuming they are in that database.

Strangely enough, though, I dont' think that program can switch 1, 2, 3 numbering to 01, 02, 03. Hrm. Although if you load them in the proper order you might be able to get it to do that, I'm not sure. Great program to have, though, in any case.

I tried just adding the 0 to them Jinxy, it was still a nogo.

I have however downloaded an ID3 tag program editor and noticed that each of the first non-functional book says "Track 00" for 20 odd tracks. They all said "00"

I am going to see if that was the issue.

I am dumb, but not completely inept. I have been haggling this for a while, but only recently re-asked for help.

Will download your program for another resource.

uh, that's a freeware program if I'm recalling correctly :P

I just uploaded it to my webspace since it was easier than hunting it down on download.com or whatever.

00, that's weird... hope you get it sorted, that's gotta be a pain in the neck.
