Scaling on Flat-Panels

I've been playing Starcraft, but it looks like total ASS since my monitor's native resolution is 1600x1200 and Starcraft runs at 800x600. Looks the same whether or not I used the built-in scaling or my video card's. (6800GT)

Just wondering if there were any 3rd-party utilities out there to help this kind of issue. For example, if you've ever played any emulators, they have some great filters that keep the picture nice even though you may be blowing up 320x240 to 1024x768 or higher. Are there any programs that would sit between an older game and your video card to get these kinds of effects?

It's just frustrating, and a huge drawback with flat-panels :/

I can't really see how a program would do that,;since most interface and game textures are packed, and thus quite impossible to just *resize*. Emulators use a technique to do this because most of the old-games sprites and textures don't contain too much colors.

I know of such a program, it's called "Move your monitor further away from your eyes, version 1.2" I can't find a download link though, so I guess you're out of luck on that image

I'd assume 800x600 would scale to 1600x1200 better than most other conversions since it would logically just double the width and height of each pixel. I play Diablo 2 at 800x600 on my 1280x1024 17" TFT, and while it's not exactly pretty, it's not all that bothersome either.

Somehow this reads in my minds eye as "So you'll have a pixel the size of a small pea, whats the real issue here?" <img src=" SRC="images/smiles/rofl.gif">

Starcraft is actually at 640x480, but on my 17" panel its never bothered me.

Rather than leave stuff at the defaults (application controlled) I set all the quality settings on my video card to 'forced' for Starcraft. I don't think anti-aliasing works on 2D games, but it seems to look at little better so maybe some of the general image quality setting kicked in a little? Or maybe I'm just nuts, and so used to it by now I can't tell the difference.

It does seem dumb that video cards have a million setting for "3D" image quality, and pretty much nothing for improving "2D" processing. A few filters etc. for situations like this would be nice.

It's a competely different system. 2D is just whacking sprites onto the screen, and past general fullscreen antialiasing (which is effectively done anyway by the sprite artists), theres not much you can do. The way starcraft (like most other 2D games) works, theres really no way to improve it without completely rewriting the engine.
