It's not sad. Almost the entire originating Netscape team works with the Mozilla Group ... if you want to support them: use Firefox. AOL bought Netscape in the mid-late 90s and just grounded it to dust, by trying to whore out the suite in the same vein as MS does with IE. They also packed mandatory pieces of software like AIM and AOL into the browser. Just really clunky stuff. They also demanded that the browser be released on many occasions before it was done.
Just to note, IE was someone else's browser licensed to Microsoft under a new name (I don't remember the name it was Sky something). They were sued for it as well, because they weren't paying the company any royalties. They got out of that by saying they didn't sell IE it was packaged with Windows for free.
The things they introduced to make IE "better" are exactly what people exploit to gain access to your computer (active x, for example). While it allowed people incredible control over the browser ... it had to be executable code, which allowed access to the machine's hardware ... so they just made a streamline of access into the heart of your computer.
