How could you think else reaper?

damn!

But honestly, I just thought more about whether if I get a guest pass for DOD:S, for example (and use it) this means I cannot guest-pass play any other game for the coming 6 months. Which, since I already did 2 free weeks for DOD:S means I shouldn't have taken the DOD:S and should have waited for another game that sounds more interesting instead.

Which isn't really that important.

At all.

Hilarious, your double team.

The full FAQ states through all answers that a guest pass can be sent to one person, and is usable within a certain limit of days - clearly outlined as being activated from when it is started/activated.

Read the page I posted again, even with English as a second language, the purview of a guest pass is clearly explained.

I scanned through the Steam forums to no avail. yeah some had a similar condition, but no one pinned down the fix.

I then tried to repair the program through the control panel.. No go.
I then tried downloading Steam again and allowing it to fix it... It updated then quit, again.

I have now un-installed it, and used a registry cleaner to remove the last bits. Wish me luck as I re-install.

[EDIT] GOD f**kING DAMMIT!
Steam still refuses. smiley

I dunno what else to do.

That sounds very sucky. You sure it's not a firewall blocking Steam? I had a lot of troubles with the Windows firewall, which seems to be more restrictive and seemingly auto-activates itself even when my other (proper) firewall is just out of date with it's updates. I marked HL2 as a friendly program but it still blocked all its Internet traffic every few seconds resulting in horrendous lags. It's a bit different but I searched for months to find a fix for this and would have never thought it was the windows firewall (which I set up to run Steam and HL2 freely).

just something to consider...

Steam worked fine until the update last week. I reinstalled it and it updated. BUT after it finished, the program still borked out.

Could a windows firewall allow it to update, but not load?

How do I check the windows firewall setting?

[EDIT] I turned off windows firewall. Steam still borked.

It's a shield-shaped icon in the control panel called "security center".

Whenever Steam.exe is updated (changed), the security settings for it are reset (to unknown/dangerous) I think. At least I think so. Also check and double-check your own firewall, of course. It sounds very much like a firewall problem (which doesn't mean it is <img src=" SRC="images/smiles/sad.gif"> ).

UPDATE:
OK this is what I have done, in no particular order...

  • Tried to patch Steam.
  • Tried reinstalling over the previous Steam.
  • Uninstalled Steam.
  • Re-installed Steam.
  • Uninstalled Zone Alarm.
  • Disconnected my modem and used another.
  • Disconnected my router.
  • Shut off Windows Firewall.
  • Searched the Steam forums.

All to no avail.
I currently am running with FireFox, no router and no firewalls. My machine is wide open and still Steam fails to load.

Anyone have any clues????

I'm not sure whether this was included in the already done list but:

In zoneAlarm, open the main window, click "Program control" on the left, then select the "Programs" tab. There should be a huge list already but you can also add programs manually.

See if that list has one (or two) entries for Steam.exe. Klick "custom" and set trusted level to "super", klick and allow all kinds of access. There can be two entries for 1 program, so make sure they're all allowed and open. Maybe restart windows, also.

I had a few problem with these program control settings.

PS: Make sure virus and firewall definitions are updated in zoneAlarm. I think Windows Firewall runs almost mandatory if there's anything not up to date.

good luck. <img src=" SRC="images/smiles/icon_wink.gif">

The strange thing is that Windows Firewall seems to activate itself automatically, even if you think you de-activated it. This was my problem. So Installing Zone-Alarm and checking its Program control settings possibly results in a different outcome than not running a Firewall at all.

That's what I was thinking of.

So if I understand your point, Windows firewall could be turning itself back on after I shut it down?

How would I assure its off then?

Uninstall Windows XP

But honestly, I'm not an IT expert. This is very vague speculation based on random experiences. Probably I'm wrong. I just had a problem with Source that could be solved by doing what I described, so there's a 2% chance it could help with Steam, also.

No guarantees. Maybe your Windows Firewall is off and I'm talking nonsense. image

Control Panel>Windows Firewall
I've never seen it switch back and forth.

I finally got around to uninstalling my Steam. I cleared up 9.3gb on C. I'm going to reinstall it on the 250gb HDD whenever I get the patience to go through the install. Hopefully, everything will work out when I reinstall.

EDIT: I got everything back. Yay!!

UPDATE: I ran 4 spyware programs and trend housecall, Steam failed to load.
I ran AVG, steam loaded.

I dunno exactly what it found, but apparently it was some virus or AVG wouldn't have resolved it.

Sadly, I cannot find any of my disks to reinstall any of my games. At least I cannot find them before I leave for California.

The good news is, Steam is back up and running. Tis a real shame I didn't run AVG before I uninstalled everything.

Oh well. image

[EDIT] I am wondering, Steam gives me the option of downloading the games. You think it would remember me and just add the product codes to each game?

It might take me forever to locate my product codes with all the boxes I have stacked around here. smiley

i've never had to enter any product codes. any time that i've reinstalled steam, it knows what games i'm entitled to, as soon as i log in.

This has always been the case with steam. "Go to any computer and access your games through steam" ring a bell?

Blame it on Microsoft, God does.

Honestly? No. I don't doubt you but I never thought about it. Till this time, I have never had trouble with Steam. None at all.

Even now I am wondering. The file it said had a virus, had been on my machine for months. Still, I don't care as long as Steam is working again.
