I know, and it's quite brilliant.
VC++ Express edition however, is a bummer. It's quite a nerfed version. I think I'll be getting a student version or something.

Anyone knowing any tutorials on how to get it to compile with MingW? Then I might give a look in to the source of the Source(SDK).

Forget it with MinGW. There was a tutorial on the SourceSDK wiki, but compiling under minGW causes more trouble than anything else.

? quoting Tracer Bullet
people cannot flow abundantly unless you put them through a wood-chipper. "affluent creativity" on the other hand is actually one of their examples...
Well, the process of passing through a chipper would only be considered creative to a serial killer. I dunno if i wanna be in the same category as a killer who makes art out of people pieces.
I favor my ideal that knowledge is fluidic and as such can flow. " SRC="images/smiles/icon_wink.gif">

Oh thank God. A Source Code update to get the code to work with VCE Express is something I've been waiting for, since I've never been able to find any links to the 2003 version of Visual C++ :/
And yea, I'd pay for it to if I could just find someone selling it.
Anyhow, I need to try compiling SDK Code some time :]

What do these Valve guys have against standards?
" SRC="images/smiles/sad.gif"> MingW compiles standard(ANSI) C and C++ and more, but I guess Valve just uses so much stuff added by M$ in their code that isn't too close to the standard... I actually couldn't compile some standard examples on MS VC at our school because the MS made compiler doesn't understand standard C(the example I took from a 1970s C programming book compiled just fine in both MingW and DJGPP(as well as an old Borland compiler I had on my 486)).

I assume the programmers at Valve have nothing against standards, rather, they prefer solid IDE's.
" SRC="images/smiles/icon_smile.gif">
Note that standards may change over times - 1970's code probably isn't compliant with the C99 standard. But, I'm no expert in language standards, I'm just a humble programmer.

Something very similar to the "Hello World" program shouldn't be very different between different versions of a standard, but then again what would I know.

I can understand why it's impossible to keep it standard. They're not writing your-average-2000-lines-C++ app here.

There's actually a very good chance that it doesn't work with the standard because they're using MS development tools. I mean ... the founding members of Valve were Microsoft employees.
It is not impossible to keep to a standard when the standard changes and adapts to newer technologies, while never invalidating previous techniques and ideas. They're just now phasing out using the standard library .h files (They want you to use namespaces).
The point is, code written at the beginning stages of a language should work for all eternity. The compilers should support all features described in a language's standard.
Visual C++ could actually be considered a seperate language. Basic syntax is the same, but practices aren't.

Great! Now make the camera move with it, add some Matrix-styled number screen overlays and add give the rocket a big blast.

I can see it now. When the computer calculates that when you fired it will be an instant kill and head shot, it will go into Super Death Cam Mode and follow the bullet ... or rocket to its destination.
Though then you have the problem of getting killed while that happens.
