Can you read the following paragraph fluently? The poll is just to check if snarkpit is a good statistical test sample, to verify the 55 % <img src=" SRC="images/smiles/icon_smile.gif">

I had a little difficulty reading the first 3 or 4 words, but after I got used to it I could read the rest of the text fluently.

Where'd you get 55%? From what I heard nobody that can read should have a problem with it, because it's a function of everyone's brain.

That's pretty old. It's something you hear in typography classes. It shows how important it is to have good proportions between spacing, kerning and line height, because that's all that really counts when it comes to clear and readable type.

oh my you have different modes !

yeah i got that 55% in the same mail. Maybe their testgroup didn't read much, in any case i doubt they were forum frequenters where misspelling happens a lot :P

I don't think we could read that if it wasn't grmatically correct. Meaning that if correct grammar wasn't present in that paragraph, then we couldn't read it. Which explains why I cant read people's posts when theres misspellings AND poor grammar.

He has three modes, walk, collate, and kill.

I could read this with a only a bit of slowing down. But I don't care about any of those studies, you should still learn to spell correctly. Now with the dawn of Firefox's built-in spell-checker, you shouldn't have any problem with proper spellings...grammar's a different story, but you should learn that, too.


Also change the texture of the dock. Docks are rarely tile. -Facepunch

FF's spell checker has issues and interface flaws ... like putting the suggestions right next to the "Add to Dictionary" function. "s**t! My hand slipped ... well that's how you spell it now."

You forgot one of the most predominant modes: complaining. Well ... I guess that's under the "Kill" category.

I have the same sentiment, I can read the original paragraph because I know what it's going to say...peoples' abstract grammar explosions formerly known as English are rough for me to read sometimes. I tend to read grammar as-is, and when people use the wrong words I have to stop and read it multiple times to try and figure out what they're thinking; often it's not worth it, unfortunately.

You could prolly do it there as well, if there weren't 300 letters in their alphabets. Assuming, you could write up/down and from right to left. <img src=" SRC="images/smiles/icon_biggrin.gif">

There are two things I have learned about text. It never translates well, even into the authors own language and, even with incorrect spelling, if the general intent is grasped, the message served its purpose.

Oh, yeah... I can read it fluently. I used to print corrugated containers. I can read as well upside down or backward text at nearly normal speeds.

I guess you can do it in japanese if you use roman letters and make the misspellings at letter lever, not kana level, but it still wouldn't work as well I think.

If you're using a language that has characters based on sounds, like Chinese, Japanese, Arabic, etc, you can't misspell anything, if you misspell something ... then you're saying something new and not what you intended to say. Unless you do what Andrei suggested, which wouldn't really work very well either, unless you were used to reading the languages sounded out in other alphabets.

To note, Arabic only has about 28 characters in their alphabet.
