None of my contacts ever seem to appear online. I suspect this has something to do with the problem; under Tools>Options>Connection I get this picture at the top:


|PC|-------(/!)-----|server|-----------(globe)


Sorry I don't have a file hosting account for a PNG but does anyone else get that exclaimation mark (!) in the warning box?

It also says under the image,

You are directly connected to .NET Messenger Service

and

You are connected to the internet using a direct connection. (Administrator).

I also tried upgrading from MSN Messenger version 7.5 to Windows Live Messenger version 8.1.

Are you behind a router / (software/hardware) firewall ? Might want to check the settings for that.

Also, try to connect with an alternative client (Gaim, Miranda, aMsn) and see if that works. If it does, something's probably wrong with your MSN client installation.

I have the Windows Firewall on and the Don't allow exceptions box unchecked. When you say try to connect with an alternative client, what do you mean by that?

Get rid of windows firewall. Its like a screen door, everything you want to go in and out doesn't see it and walks straight into it. While all the bugs just fly through all the hole.

These are other programs you can use msn with, instead of the Windows Live Messenger client.
