I really liked the character development of Quake and HL1.

The best First Person Shooter ever made for any system is Descent. Not even Half-Life can touch the old-school bad ass that is Descent. Before you call this fanboyism, remember, fanboys only like new games. <img src=" SRC="images/smiles/icon_rolleyes.gif">

Wow, it's like a super awesome Master Chief went up against a regular Samus Aran. Then other stuff happens. When "The End" shows up on the screen, watch where Samus's hand goes. :dodgy:
Not that I don't think you all could've figured it out on your own. <img src=" SRC="images/smiles/icon_rolleyes.gif">

Hey now, I enjoyed Descent. It's a pitty that the original game had such horrible difficulty -- the chaingunner robot can destroy a fully armed ship with 200% shields in a about 2-3 seconds or so :/

And yes, Level 7 had the most rediculous boss fight of all time.

The only thing I remember when thinking of Decent is that I felt motion sick when playing it... and ugly graphics.

Descent is the only game I've ever played that gave me motion sickness.

And G.ballblue I was making a joke you doofus.

Ok, it's not a game so much as a TV show, but MTV Cribs.

Any game that gives someone motion sickness gets a gold star in my book.

I wouldnt call Descent an FPS, its closer to a sim or something.

In any case, it is total win. I remember playing it for hours and collapsing as soon as I finished it.

It's in the first person, and it's a shooter.

so is X-Wing, TIE Fighter, Freelancer, every combat flight sim ever made, and all the Mechwarriors + crappy knockoffs

I think of mechwarrior as a First Person Shooter, why wouldn't it be? You're restricted to limited movement along the Z axis (unless you get a very light mech with nothing but jump jets).

I draw the line at where the player is allowed to fly (Descent 3 was pushing it). In Descents 1&2, you were restricted mostly to small rooms, as well as most of Descent 3. TIE fighter let you go pretty much whereever you wanted.
The ceiling constitutes a limit on Z movement as far as I'm concerned.

Mechwarrior has much more in common with a tank sim than a fps, at least in my eyes. You have objective-based missions, you never pick up any weapon or ammo during those missions, you have to worry about damage to specific sections of your chassis, you have to customize your loadout before the mission, combat is slow paced and maneuverability and positioning is as important as anything else. Obviously all those spaceship games I mentioned were space sims. I'd classify Descent as an action 'sim' myself.

sigh, almost all of my favorite games of my youth are in the dead simulation genre. No wonder I hate almost every game released these days and can't stand any of the current console generation, they have zero depth . What I wouldn't give for a new Mechwarrior!

Great, now I want to play them all, I guess I'll have to dig up MW3.

By the way, which game or expansion did you think was the best out of all the Mechwarriors?

You guys are seriously making me want to track down the original MW games and play them :/ I actualy have a copy of MW1, but our old Win95 computer didn't have powerful enough hardware to run it. And well, I couldn't get the thing to run on WinXP.

I thought Mechwarrior 2 Mercs was the best. Sadly I can't get my copy running on my computer smiley
