I don't know how many of you fellows know about this, but as of January 1 Orpheus has 'retired' from HL1 mapping and editing. I doubt he'll be showing up here often, considering he hasn't been around since like the 17th of December yet has posted recently at Prefabland (ps: not a stalker ).

Anyways, he gave me the last compiled version of the map and the .map and .rmf files. I can't check how the compiled map looks until I get back to college (stupid online-required Steam), but based on the last version I saw I'm going to assume the weapon placement, player starts, and various other things still need work. I'm completely willing to pick up where he left off and work on that stuff, my only problem being I have no way of compiling it. So if I were to continue on I would need someone who can and will compile this thing.

The question of the hour is whether or not I should work on improving it or just cut our losses and release the map as is. I'm of the opinion that since so much work by the community has been put into it releasing it now would be a disservice, but if everyone else wants to wash their hands of it I will be willing to let it go.

I don't want to give an address for the map since I don't want the .rmfs given out to the public, but if there is demand I will.

This sucks for many reasons...

The Snark Pit without Orph? the average daily post count will plummit! I'd been wondering what had happend to him. that really is quite a loss for this place

WHAT THE f**k?!

He didn't even say anything, after coming here for years - I'd seen his profile that said retired, I didn't believe it. Do you know this for sure, Yak? I think in Orph's case I can borrow the words "he really tied the room together," from the Big Lebowski, except for the fact that this is a site, not a room, and he isn't a rug. Terrible jokes aside though, Orph was really something amazing and instrumental in the entire soul of the Snarkpit. Nobody else took the time to screenshot every point of their reviews, nobody else had a postcount that could even touch his - and of course, Orph always had an amazing faith and trust in a lot of people here, myself included.

The Snarkpit Crew map is really and ingenius project. If you really want it off your hands, I'd take it myself - it's probably one of the greatest mapping achievements of Half-Life, having several experienced mappers stich together one coherent product. Though I most likely couldn't map the half of what you fellows have made, I could at very least give it pretty textures

Sad that Orph left without releasing his final work.

That's why I did a double take myself when I saw the email. I would have expected some sort of announcement from him, given the amount of time he's spent here and in HL in general. He said in the email that he deleted HL and is done with mapping for it. Then he told me to get the last remaining files for the snarkpitcrew map before they were gone.

I do not doubt his sincerity in being done, since I watched him leave the [DRS] clan that he helped found, recruited like half of the good members, and was the entire reason the clan stayed together. He said he was gone, and he was gone forever (taking many others with him in the aftermath). I'd bet people could drag him back, but what would be the point if he doesn't want to be here?

It may just be that he's waiting for HL2 or something, I dunno. Orph is a tough one to figure out

As for the map, I am completely willing to finish it up, as long as I can get somebody to compile it or tell me all the files and special configurations I need to do it myself and if everyone accepts the changes I will make.

"This agression will not stand, man"

I was wondering what had happened to Orph. It's a great loss to the SnarkPit community. Remember, everyone has their real life outside of these forums; Orpheus may have chosen to leave for reasons that have little to do with the SnarkPit itself (eg., posting here was taking too much time away from home life).

He may have chosen to leave without any warning in order to prevent a long drawn-out discussion with other members. It can be tough to leave a place (and people) of which you are very fond; sometimes "cold-turkey" is the best way.

It's also possible that he became frustrated with something about the Pit. If this is the case, he may return, since it's happened before.

Regardless, he'll be missed

I'm sure we'll see him again in a few months I might be able to look at it for you Yak if you need to pass it on...

I think he quit partly because an argument wasn't going his way - see the 'dm_osiris' thread.

If this was the case, I never intended to drive him away, as I still respect him as a mapper, but find it hard to respect his opinions at times (which you have to admit can be quite extreme).

Get him to come back if possible, he has a lot to offer many of the mappers here

And regarding the Snarkpit map, i'd be willing to lend a hand if you're interested.

I don't think he left because of the little argument you got there 'bout dm_osiris ... that's not Orph-style

Anyway, I hope he'll be back.

I think we should chenge the name of the map to something Orph orientated, or put a wee shrin in it for him, seeing at it'll be his last release and he put so much into it. It's the least we could do.

How about a Doom2-secret-level style shrine!
