My old, 40GB HD just doesn't cut it anymore. But I've sworn not to start upgrading my current system anymore and get a complete, new and fresh one instead, sometime this autumn.

But a HD shouldn't cause any troubles, so I could buy a new one now and just add it to my coming system later.

I do have SATA connections on my board (but not the latest version, I suppose) and I'm planning on getting one of this type. I have no idea, however, if there are any compatibility issues (except for newer HD's features not being fully exhausted by my older connections).

I'm looking for a good balance between price/speed/capacity/quality. I'm planning to stay beneath 100?, I'll be happy to pay 10? or 20? more, however, if it's a noticeable difference. Anything beyond 100GB, maybe 250GB or so would be fine.

It's so difficult when you people on the other side of the planet ask for computer hardware help and put price points down.

I'd say, "no problem, it's cheap", but I don't know how much it costs for anything locally for you. The sites I know of also don't ship worldwide.

But, if you want an idea, 250GB hard drives (Maxtor and Western Digital with 3-5 year warranties) run for well under $100USD here. So do your silly conversion and mark up and see if that sounds good to you as a starting price. Then find some place that actually sells and ships to your domain.

I don't know the conversion from $ to euros, but there's a couple all under $100

Newegg doesn't ship overseas. He'd have to have someone buy it for him then ship it through FedEx or something.

When I need to buy a harddrive I just go down to the computer store, or some store and buy one on the day.

We usually have higher import costs, taxes etc. but the dollar/euro difference often results in very similar values. No need to start calculating.

I purchase based on a local site that lists hardware based on prices and vendor ratings, so I usually find the cheapest prices around. I don't really care about any particular site.

Forget any $-conversion or shipping issues. It's not that important. I'm just looking for a quality, future-worthy HD that isn't ridiculously pricey. Anywhere in the world.

Also if anyone knows a trap, a particularly inconvenient product to warn me about, I'd be happy to know.

Get a Seagate Barracuda ST3500630AS.

It's 500GB at 7200 RPM with a 16MB Cache and SATA 3.0Gb/s interface (can clock down) with a 5 Year warranty (might not help you much) and is running for about $120 USD.

good hard drive I have a 200 GB external barracuda and no problems at all in the two years I've been using it

92.31 ? in the cheapest, reliable store in Austria. Which happens to be just 3 blocks away.
