[addsig]I dont get steam anyways. I mean, I dont even use it but I dont see the point of it. Make everybody do a 650meg download and change the whole system...
And I agree with the valve is becomming microsoft comment. Aparently public interest isnt their main concern anymore...

Steam is going to be mandatory and part of Half-Life 2, whether you like it or not. It's way too late to go back for Valve, they've committed way too many resources to Steam already (all the servers, the network, etc.) Might as well convert now and get used to it.
I have to say, I'm enjoying Steam. The "point" is to automatically deliver mods and patches without you having to end up waiting in Fileplanet for a few hours or whatever. They're really designing for the public interest.

If steam was still up they could send robots controlled by Half-life players to stop it!

Most people wouldn't mind Steam so much if it would stop bloody updating itself all the time.
I suppose most non broadband people could somehow manage to get the whole 700+MB download. But as soon as you install it, it starts to update itself. Don't see the point in it myself... How tough can it be to host an "updated" version for download?

or you can look for it on http://www.filemirrors.com of course.
we used to use 3dDownloads for the Action HL Map Depot but half the time people couldn't even get the maps. Hell, the little window won't even refresh for me so I can't even wait in line. I had to use my ftp access to download the maps so I could upload them to the new webhost ![]()
Seems to me that whether it's Steam or a patch it's still the same bandwidth. If Valve wants to save us the trouble of fileplanet they could just host the patches themselves at the same bandwidth cost as steam- less in fact since other places would mirror it for them. Clearly they want us to be totally their bitches, though.
but on the other hand.
instead of waiting in queues for hours on end once every few months when a big feck-off patch is ready, we now get lots of little fixes that are automatically installed one at a time as they are made ready, and in only a few seconds. so unless valve need to make some major changes to steam, i don't really see us having to go through any more 600meg+ downloads again
here's hoping anyway ![]()

| That's right, Mustang ... when you run a system where thousands of gamers all over the world are depending on (especially when CS:CZ or HL2 are going to be released ... notice the sarcasm.) you just can't run this without backup generators or anything. |

Speaking of which, I really hope they're capable of supporting all the new players that'll come with those games. |
If they're not capable of supporting steam Gamers now (which is still not the amount of people that played on WON), it sure doesn't look like it.

Yep!
Maybe the AI and the physics might be more complicated though and force more data to be sent. But Steam is already a broadband platform, which means HL2 will be. Sorry.
Some ppl I knew played doom online (yes, the origional!) because they didn't have broadband! But I think I'de have BB by the time I decide to start playing games online.
