If you head into your options on the main menu, then go to your controls page, you should be able to bind any key you like to screenshot. I can't recall which button it is by default. Once your screenshots have been taken they'll be saved to your "...SteamApps<username>half-lifevalve" directory as a .BMP file. You'll then want to open it up in some image editor (paint, photoshop, whatever) to turn it into a .JPG if you're gonna post it online anywhere.

By default, the screenshot key is [F5].

I thought they used another less common format like .tga or .png but I could be wrong.

The directory structure is still the same for Steam or old school Sierra copies, just on the "vanilla" version you can ignore the steamid@blahblah.com rubbish and jump straight to valve directory.

Incidentally I had a run out on doublecross earlier and took a screenshot of my half decent performance, that came out as a .bmp

Just for the sake of clarity, Half-Life can. If you simply type "screenshot" into the console, HL will spit out a poorly named .tga file rather than a .bmp.

I'm not entirely sure about the origins of this, but I do believe this dates back to the days of the original Quake engine. I know I've seen a beta screenshot of Half-Life in which the words "quake001.tga" were even being printed at the top of the screen!

That's fine.. may as well leave it on now. I love how one of our most active topics in days has been about screenshots for the original Half-Life. I no less than demand someone jigs things up by releasing a high quality TF2 map in the vain of "gravelpit" so that we may laud praise and scantily clad women (or men!) upon them.
