I imagine the snarks from half life were named after the oft hunted, never seen creature from Lewis Carrolls' Poem, "The hunting of the snark" I've just finnished reading it. (It took me about 30 minutes) Its well worth the read, as it is quite bizare and very amusing. You can read the whole thing online here Plus heres a cool picture from the site:

Plus heres my favourite verse.

They sought it with thimbles, they sought it with care;
They pursued it with forks and hope;
They threatened its life with a railway-share;
They charmed it with smiles and soap.
