Well said Gwil! Some people seem to think that it's not a big deal if you use up a disabled space - after all, there's usually loads of them free, right? And of course, if you live with someone who has a disabled badge, it's okay to borrow it, right?
Wrong. My mum cannot walk at all. She has to be transferred out of the passenger seat directly into a wheelchair. A normal parking space is just not wide enough for that. Also, the surfaces outside of shops etc. are almost always rougher than the surfaces inside the shop. The further we have to push her from the car, the more pain she's in. Even surfaces that you might think are ideal for a wheelchair - such as neat, scalloped brickwork - cause her left leg to spasm violently. Add to that the difficulty of carrying shopping back to the car at the same time as pushing a wheelchair, and you can see just how important disabled parking spaces are to her ability to live at least a little independently
People do the same thing with disabled toilets. "Hey, there was a queue for the gents, so I just popped in the disabled loo - that's okay, right?" Wrong again. If I need the toilet, I can usually wait. I can go somewhere else. My mum can't just run around the corner to go to the loo. If she can't get into a disabled toilet, it often means driving all the way home. And of course, she's built up enormous anxiety about being able to reach a toilet.
I have no time for any excuses about illegitimately using disabled facilities. There is no excuse short of "I'm driving an emergency ambulance and I had to park here to reach my patient".
If you don't have your own disabled badge, you are not entitled to use disabled facilities. Simple.

Bravo Mike....well spoken. in my humble estimation, it boils down to common courtesy....something which is sorely lacking in this day and age....apparently, the world over....

driving for a living, i hope you can imagine my outlook on what i have seen, its appalling what people will rationalize away as acceptable behavior on our highways and byways.
people often fail to realize that rights do not overlap very well, what you do effects others in some way.

Engineers struggled to diagnose what was wrong with the rover. Among the possible causes: a corruption of its software or computer memory. If the software is awry, NASA can fix it from Earth by beaming patches across more than 100 million miles of space or by rebooting the rover's computer |
What're the odds that they'll try and use Steam to get it to work?
(Well it is called Broadband Content Delivery...)

If that happens NASA should use the Steam tech-support team as their first humans "test" on mars.
either way we win. [addsig]
