I was just thinking, instant messaging is great and all, but what say ye to an instant messaging system on this site- like private messages, but more instant (you request to talk to someone, next time they load a page it informs you of this, and you can chat inside a popup window...). With the advent of the 'online' notifiers, I think it could come in handy! So many of you goons who I wouldn't talk to usually on MSN/ICQ but would if it was basically just fast PMing

Sounds like it'd tie in nicely with the online/offline info under the avatars. hopefully it'd let people bitch to each other privately too! [addsig]

This'll be good, since the people from here that have tried to IM usually end up doing it during inopportune times. I actually had one guy (out of like the 4 that have IM'd me) IM me while my parents were at my dorm for my birthday.

gets my vote, especially since me and A_S, or me and gollum use the PM system as an icq message service at times..

there have been days where we have sent 10 or 20 PM's a day

Well I do have jIRC working, but a while ago I wrote a simple thing like this that let me talk to my brother over our LAN; was basically an IRC-like window which refreshed itself every few seconds I'll have a play around with it and see.

Well, if the refreshing page is kept pretty simple, it shouldn't do... be nice if I knew something about Java and could make an applet that loads of websites could install and have the direct person-to-person thing going...

Something like a tagboard, then ?

There's tons of free PHP tagboards around, autorefresh every second without the hideous click-sound, and you have a good system.
