Ok heres the problem guys, as you know, i do an awful lot of critiques, and while doing so, i do an awful lot of screenshot gathering..

while doing egozoogo's new map de_asstech an issue arose that i have never had brought to my attention before..

look at these images in sequence.

now heres my dilemma, i do not want to be giving false information while critiquing a map, but also if the error is not mine, i do not want to overlook it either..

notice in the second screenshot, this is an image taken on tims computer, and is supposed to represent how he views this map.. it is light glitch free, but notice the same location , taken on my computer, and i know its how i am seeing it..

the question is, "WHY!!!"

why are they different..

does he have a better card? possibly, but mine is more than HL baseline..

does he have his HL setup differently?  i am using openGL and an nVidia card..

has anyone got a clue.. i really need to know, which is the accurate representation of this map, cause my future as a map critiqueer could depend upon it..

what i am asking is for a few of you to look ar this map yourself and post some comparative screens that you captured..

for the record, money$hot also see's this area as "light glitch free" ...

i need a solution here guys..

Could it just be different gfx cards?

Or maybe those nasty 'random' tiling textures that never seem to work quite right (though they only work on some gfx cards and not others I believe).

Contrast being different on the two computers making the errors more obvious to you and not to other?

I've had similar issues with this before - and sometimes simply recompiling the map gets rid of some - and makes others. It's a mystery where they come from to me, but I bet theres a perfectly good explanation Other than that though, i'm as puzzled as you are.

i have done a bit of testing, and i don't like what i am seeing..

i have my pc set to openGL, but if i switch to D3D most, if not all of the light glitches go away..

i hope this is not the case, because i am not inclined to run in D3D just to NOT see light glitches..

further analysis is required i guess..

if this glitch is related to openGL, would more light bounced fix it?

meh, image #2 is the worst + its fairly normal m8. Not allot to worry about. not much of a glitch, just an old engine. check u have your latest drivers & directX and FSAA on & thats the best u can do. [addsig]

Also check your graphic settings in your config/autoexec files.  There are settings, that will sort of adjust the light patches ingame, and give you all kind of weird, ugly, texture errors.

so says the wise man

assuming for a second that i am really stupid (yeah doesn't take long does it) what line/setting exactly should i be looking for?

what is a correct representation?

what would be an erroneous one?

thats part of the problem....its gonna be different on every setup....from gfx cards, to settings, to a number of things.....i know that doesnt help much, but.....it reminds me of trying to sort a dfx drawing on three different systems, and throwing a dart at a board as to which one is right.....

should come with a disclaimer.."tweak to taste and at your own risk"...

my biggest concern, is passing along defective information..

i feel my PC is setup properly, but am unsure now..

i would hate to have people fixing or attempting to fix issues that are only on my system..

*scratches buttocks*

i am assuming, that its not localized to my pc alone.. so i guess it will have to be as you say "tweak at your own risk" :/

Just say at the bottom - check these "mistakes" with your own copy of Half-Life if they are related to lighting (or something along those lines) - hopefully people will have the intelligence to! Let's not see an end to these critiques!

Yea... I must admit i was a little worried when i saw those pictures of my map! the first thing i did was run through it again and check for glitches... but couldn't find them. I use a 256mb GeforceFX 5600... What do you use, Orph?

Btw I agree with gwil... i don't really mind that the shots have light errors as long as i got some helpful info about my map!

I think this is just a case of high gamma settings smoothing out all the lighting glitches.  Besides, there's no download that I can see

I use a GeForce 5800 Ultra, special release.

I see the map just fine. Crisp clear and vibrant.

Orpheus, your card and the way you see it could be the very same for alot of people out there.. so maybe we need to figure out a way to make it look good on those systems as well.. so it could be a good thing..

On the other hand, with the above said, and all the new graphics cards coming out, it might be time to upgrade.

I am assuming from your pictures your useing a Hercules card with the Kyro drivers.. they are glitchy drivers that often do what I see in your pic's. Not a bad card at all, just find the Kyro drivers tend to a bit bitchy..

From the screens I get the feeling it's just a gamma issue, but I'll check the map out just for kicks to see what I get.

I had the same exact problem in Natural Selection. Make sure light_gamma and gamma commands are normal. I don't know what happened but one day it just decided to fix itself.. so whatever.

I don't think you need to worry about it Orph. I've had these errors too, and the problem is always solved by moveing the offending pice of archatecture away from the wall, or making it a func_wall. these errors will show up on many peoples computers, so it's worth trying to avoid them even if you can't see them on your macheine, and therefor a valid point in a critique, possibly even more so than anything else since these are errors the author can't even see!

for the record, I run a GeForce 2 Go 32MB
