I don't think I've shown you guys these yet, but I once found myself with some extra time at a LAN party and proceeded to map the battle levels from Mario Kart 64.  I probably should redo them now that I know a bit more about visblocking and all that, and if I find the time I will, but you can check out my early work here.  (note: maps degenerate into egon fest rather quickly, since I didn't understand "weapon placement" at the time)

I think those Mario Kart arenas have been done more times than fy_iceworld. Might be more suited to something like HL Bumper Cars than DM though [addsig]

I've never come across a Mario Kart port.  I'm afraid it doesn't look like it'll work very well to me, as they seem rather killboxy.

Looks like they'd be fun maps to play, Hornpipe.

I've made a Mario_Kart map too:
http://docrocksmaps.homestead.com/files/mario_kart.zip

Also a Mario_Land map:
http://docrocksmaps.homestead.com/files/mario_land.zip

and a Mario_Air map:
http://docrocksmaps.homestead.com/files/Mario_Air.zip

and a Mario_Killbox map:
http://docrocksmaps.homestead.com/files/Mario_Killbox.zip

and two others:  Mario_Madness and Mario_Xmas. (I'll post shots a little later) Mario is a fun theme to make maps of.  People enjoy them too. Especially the younger players.    I've made all these Mario maps for my son (who is 8 and loves Mario) and daughter (she's 7)...and we have a blast with em.

Cool to see there are other mappers out there who like making Mario maps too

Yeah, it does tend to involve a lot of the spawn-die-spawn-die pattern present in Killbox.  Block Fort probably has the largest longevity, since at least you can take cover there.

these types of maps are extremely frowned upon here, not to hurt your feelings, but don't expect much enthusiasm from anyone of.... shall we say, reputable experience..

none of us, will try to discourage you from making these style of maps, but do NOT take offense if we don't look upon them favorably..

stand back, pay attention to whom actually responds to them, and base your decision on that..

sorry if that sounds harsh, but its the general consensus around here.. very few even consider them maps at all..

I dont particuarly like them but if you have good fun with your m8s on it, Thats all that matters. Obviously its nice to make a really detailed map aswell as small fun ones, I made a small fun map for cs & ive had lots of fun on it, Ive also got my 1st detailed or proper map going along for the snarkpit competition.

Do whatever pleases you tbh, Some fun maps & most detailed maps please me, So I do both.

I agree whole heartedly with that statement, Korn.

Good luck Hornpipe.  Nice job on the maps, too, and keep up the good work.

Don't let the people here who hate killbox maps deter you from making them.  If you and your pals enjoy playing them, then make more.  Afterall, it's just a hobby, and you shouldn't let others (who think they are God's gift to Hammer or SnarkPit most post makers) tell you what type of map to or not to make.

Please yourself, Hornpipe.  It's time you spend doing something you enjoy.

Now, pay attention to the people who bash me for saying this, and avoid them at all costs.  You'll be better off in the long run, believe me.  There are some real losers here.

the truly sad part is, almost nothing doc said was relevant to anything, except... doc

the true gods of hammer around here, don't even acknowledge him, in any way at all..

as i said, no one will discourage you from making them, this is 100% true.. also its 100% true, that you should not be mad that WE THE VOCAL FEW will never consider them to be anything of value at all..

the only bashing of anyone here at snarkpit that ever occurs is those whom deserve it whole heartedly, in fact it rarely happens at all, save a very few whom genuinely deserve it.. case in point.. read this thread very slowly and look who, took offense OR BETTER YET , was offensive 1st.. this thread could have went on all day and gotten no worse than it was PRIOR to that post..

anyways, some are in doubt as to how much the snarkpit actually influences the Half-Life community.. we (YES i consider myself a VERY major part of this site) are an influence to be reckoned with.. and even tho we are indeed open minded about maps, we are also quite certain WHICH we think holds any value.. it doesn't really matter that there are a dozen potential sites whom may feel differently, but right here, is all that counts... anyways.. if bashing is what this is.. SO BE IT.. my laurels as most post counts ( why is it the really worthless members always use this against me?? ) member dictates, my opinions are mine, whether they are shared with anyone else or not, i am within my rights as a member to post them as opinions, without having to answer for them by those whom cannot see themselves for what they are...

as one of the most influential LOSERS here.. i am proud of the distinction.. i just wish i was one of those hammer gods as well

I don't particularly care what anyone thinks of these maps.  I'm well aware that their artistic quality is... er... lacking.  I also know that the gameplay these maps condone is not always in the spirit of HLDM, nor is it the most enjoyable way to play multiplayer Half-life.  I dislike Killboxesque architecture and layout as much as the next SnarkPit mapper (see signature), but sometimes one just has to sit down at Hammer and say "You know what might be halfway enjoyable?  xxx map from xxx game."

But it's important to note that I never asked for your praise.  I didn't take offense to anything that was said about them.  I merely posted some screenshots with a bit of history as a preface.  I don't consider a single post containing "...?" as "taking offense".

So why did I post these at all?  For one thing, I had seen a couple of DocRock's Mario maps and thought I could add a little myself.  Since the maps were already a year or two since finished, it was as simple as loading them up and taking a few screenshots.  For another, it's a break from the norm.  While everyone now concentrates on making excellent "realistic" maps for the SnarkPit mapping competition, I thought I would contribute as well - a "port" of maps from one of the most cartoony games made for the Nintendo 64.  I never expected the maps to "have value" or "lasting impact" or "solve world hunger".

In other words, thanks for all your comments, both positive and negative.  I'm not offended, I'm not angry, most of all, I'm not discouraged.  I enjoyed making these maps as much as anything else I've done, even if I never play them.  To me, Hammer is as much a toy as it is a tool, and by God, I'll play with it all I like.

^^ /me points up^^ [EDIT] dangit cash snuck in a responce my post is directed ar hornman

man do i like how you respond..

its so tedious when the less confident among us try to turn a topic down so destructive a path..

i stand by my words 100%, i meant no offense, and am really glad you didn't perceive them in any other way than i meant them..

there was no "hidden" agenda.. and i respect the right to make any type of map one wishes... i just am not to keen on people who tell me they are something they obviously are not..

anyways.. some feel my works just as unworthy, its just a damned good thing that they are out numbered by those they feel differently..

kornflakes, one of the best all around members at snarkpit, recently made/released a map i felt almost dirty for even loading on my PC, but the bottom line was, i accepted it as HIS, and he accepted that I found it offensive.. there is a lesson here guys.. i suggest YOU LEARN FROM IT!!

yus, I mean you can never please everyone, Orph wasnt keen on it but monqui & other people who dont use snarkpit had some good fun on it. I mean you can aim your map at so many different people but never all of them.

Make it so you enjoy it & your target audience enjoy it. If another audience enjoy it great, If they dont meh who cares, You pleased your target audience & yourself.

HornPipe, you deserve a lot of respect for your positive and balanced attitude; I salute you

Furthermore, I expect that with such a genuinely level-headed response to critical feedback, you will learn very quickly and benefit well from the ideas/advice/suggestions that are on offer at places like this site.

i re-read this once more and felt it prudent, that even though it ended on a positive note, i didn't want the negativity of one insecure member to influence ANYBODY in any way that would harm their future in map creativity..

the issue of being offended arose after the fact, and rightfully should not have been a factor in this posting at all if it had ended the way it should have..

your "?" wasn't an indicator to being offended, we all realized that much, but it was a question you felt strongly enuff to post and in doing so needed an answer.. it could very well have not been THE answer that was most popular, or the most tactful, but it is indeed one of legitimacy in this instance..

to make a long story short, i, and my compatriots, know that you were not offended, and that the question mark was an inquiry to gollums strange ending on his reply..

you being relatively new, you didn't and shouldn't have had to know all this..

one last point, no one, not even i, will every use our dislike for a certain type of map to convince anyone not to make one, and anyone who claims otherwise, is a bitter person, and most likely, generally not a pleasant person to be around.. but as with all things fair, you will need to decide that.... for yourself :/

re-read the below post how it was intended you to.. it will clear most of this up...
