Well you probably should have started with a map that you had something bad to say about, since normally that's part of a review. But hey, I'm not complaining

Thanks Orph

You know, I never had a hard-set atmosphere for this map, only a vague theme. But when I first came to play it, it did feel a lot like an "ancient theme park/house of fun/demented playground of a diseased mind".

you know, i did give serious thought as to how my base reputation would reflect if i started of my reviewing life with a map that was this good.

would people think all my reviews would be like this?

the answer after much debate was "YEAH", i think all my reviews will be just this honest, and forthright.

lets face it mike, this map was what? almost 5 years in the making? you know me, i do not believe in the perfect 10 map, but this one has genuinely come the closest to any i have ever witnessed, and believe me i have seen most all there is of any note.

very few maps incorporate so many aspects of gameplay all under the same title, and to me, thats what pushes this map to the top of my heap.

if there are a few, whom think i was a bit lenient and scored the map to high, screw them, let them write there own reviews.

as for my next reviews, they WILL be just as honest as this map, if its good, you'll know, if its s**t, well you'll know that too.

if you don't like my writing then DON'T SEND ME YOUR STUPID MAP!!

I'd like to see how you'd review a map by me. Could you be neutral in respect to your dislike of me, but still review the map from a reviewer's point of view, and not have disrespect toward the map because of the author?

Could you do a map review and possibly expect lashes over your words, because you based your review on only personal feelings?

I think if you could pull off a review of one of my maps without resorting to bashings or referring back to old scars, then I would respect your review techniques. I actually do respect your review techniques now, btw, altho I do believe some are biased due to friendships. This IMO only.

Give it a try with Nightmare2.

If not, I understand completely, and I know it would be hard to do.

i dunno, let me think about it, cause i read this a few times, and your asking, wasn't without its own level of hatred, the fact that you needed to remind me in several ways that i would have to do it without any personal feelings demonstrates your lack of forgetfulness..

all you needed to do was say do it orph, then let me carry the ball, after it was done, you could either gloat in my failure, or bask in my honesty.. you should know by now that SP doesn't automatically side with me, it is pretty level about flaying either of us for wrongs.

let me think on it a while, my reputation for honesty precedes our dispute, tis one of the major reasons it went on so long, cause you didn't seem to see it from that side.. if i recall, you were still my hero when i critiqued your other map, my unbiased honesty costed me one of my friends, and thats a hard pill to swallow..

let me consider it.

Blimey..
This DocRock/Orph thing seems to boil over everywhere and to be honest I think that blame can be apportioned to both sides, though I do not wish to get involved either way, I just think it would be easier if you just stopped baiting each other..

And Orph ,if in the meantime you wish to crush someones ego, feel free to do one of my TS maps. I need decent criticism (and more importantly crits of the constructive kind, since I roughly know what is wrong, though I'm not entirely sure how to fix it) but more importantly I'd just like to see what I consider to be a neutral view on one of my maps.

From the review - Ask anyone at Snarkpit about this map and the unanimous opinion is "PERFECTION"

Really ? thats NOT my opinion and therefore not unaminous, it is a totally subjective viewpoint.

It's not my opinion either. Hell, I know it's not perfect - I made it! I think that's just Orph's way of saying, the consensus from the more regular members here is that Gmdm2 is very good.

you cant score a map without scoring it as you see it. You will never give a score everyone thinks is true. [addsig]

even a completely paranoid individual could not find fault anywhere in my preceding post this is not a DOC/ORPH thing, and i would truly appreciate it REMAIN that way... trying to incite, or find issues with my choice of interaction with doc, will NOT endear me toward you

if you have an unfinished map i will gladly look at it and give a critique, assuming i have the time, i can look at other mods, and comment, but my experience primarily lies in HLDM.
my reviewing will be strictly HLDM

/me looks in profile at images, /me considers source and guesses that perfection, when compared to his maps is not good enough , /me guesses beerman is searching for an even higher form of praise for Mr. Hopley.

There is no perfect map, there is always an up and down...same with AMD vs. Intel wars, Mac vs. PC, Nintendo vs. Microsoft vs. Sony etc. etc. Often people don't see the positives to something, only the negative...in all these situation there is no perfect or else there'd be no war. Same with maps, if there was a perfect map then you wouldn't need to make anymore. [addsig]

Doc, i thought about this all day and the answer is no.

NOT because i am afraid, nor do i feel that i could not be unbiased toward you, in fact i know it would be completely fair, BUT if i reviewed a map of yours and scored it well, except for my closest comrades most would assume i am sucking up, if i scored it badly most would assume i am continuing the issues, its just not worth it.

but i do need to say that i am a bit upset with a few of your choices in wording,

1) i don't need nor crave your respect, i would accept it if given, but it should NOT be a requirement for me DOING one of your maps in review.

2) you have no real idea how much involvement i truly give to most of the mappers here, either privately of even in public, so your choice of word "BIASED' is unfounded, i doubt seriously you load 1/10 of the maps i have ever critiqued, and i doubt out of the 11 reviews i have written so far, that you loaded more than 3 or those. i take offense to your saying i show favoritism at all

snarkpit has some of the best HLDM mappers left online active, and all save a few i have been a part of their growth and i am proud of each one of them... of the few who arrived at snarkpit already masters, i would hope that they would feel comfortable asking my opinions on anything they constructed.. but ask anyone i have critiqued for, i do not play favorites, i have been harsh with every damned one of them when the situation warranted it.. but i have to say it up front, if a mapper is extremely open to suggestions, and VERY apt to use my opinions, then there will appear to be biased, how can it not LOOK that way, the map has things in it i like, so others tend to notice them, most especially if it is a major contribution..

i would really ask that you PLEASE think before you accuse me from now on... my reviewing skills are in the process of learning still, i am very new at it and realize i need to grow into it some more, BUT i am still and will remain honest no matter whom it may hurt..

if gollums map had not been as good as it was, you can rest assured i would have said so.

Orph, I think the point that Beer Hunter was making was this:

There are a lot of members at the SnarkPit, and you can't know what the opinions of all of them are. I expect some (though perhaps not many) don't even like my map.

Strictly speaking, by saying "the unanimous opinion at the SnarkPit is.....", you are claiming that everyone here agrees with you. Now I don't think that's what you really meant - it's just that that is the normal way to interpret it.

Also I think almost nobody will call this (or any other) map "perfect". They might say "close to perfect", but most people believe it's impossible to make a perfect map.

I'm not suggesting for a moment that you change anything of course I'm just trying to explain why people reacted this way to that particular phrase.

mike, stop playing goalie, i know exactly what he meant, i also know what i meant, and IMO, anyone who is important is the everyone i spoke of..

its a catchword phrase...

its like telling the cops you didn't do it, "ask anyone"

its not like someone will actually go out and ask anyone, its just a saying.

if someone choses to PICK my words to death f**k THEM!

there let them pick on that word for a bit

i don't need, nor should i feel compelled to clarify my choice in words, but.. at least around here, people say "ask anyone" quite frequently.

its as common as bud, or reckon..

the sentence remains, as is, and the intent? EXACTLY as i said it

some people, have the desire to be, abrasive.

the comment was not a noteworthy one, beerman could have went all day and never mentioned it at all, but he felt compelled, you won't change him, and i think it beneath notice.

when he has made enough of a contribution to be an "everyone" around here, i will pay him his dues, till then?
