Complete list of HL sound files wanted

Where can I get a complete list of stock sound files for HL classic, ideally with a nice description?

I got a list years ago for a bunch of WAV files in an "ambience" subfolder. But the list did not describe the sounds. The filename just tells you so much. It's a bit tedious to put each sound into a map so I can play each one to know, for example, how bee1.wav differs from bee2.wav. And then try it looped or unlooped to see if/how that goes.

On top of this, I recently stumbled onto a tutorial where it listed two more sound files in a "debris" subfolder. So maybe there are even more sounds that I am not even aware of.

(Do I need to unpack some compressed PAK file that holds all the WAVs?)

Assisted Answer
Even though it takes up a bit of space I would suggest unpacking all your sounds so that when you go to open one up in the browser you can right-click and hit "play with (insert media player here)". That way you can listen to the sound before you put it into a map.

By the way, when you unpack your sounds, don't forget to put them in the "sound" folder, that way if you select a sound in Worldcraft you don't have to worry about people later playing your map and getting "sound not found" errors.

Good luck!

EDIT: yes there are a few electric-burst sounds in the debris folder, they should be beamstart1, beamstart2 etc. or something like that.

EDIT2: you really should skim through all the sounds in the "sound" folder in your .pak/.gcf to familiarize yourself with what is possible sound-wise. Most of the folder names should be self-explanatory.

What's the filename, and how do I unpack it?

Sorry if it's a lame question, but I'm fairly new to this.

Thanks.

For Steam it should be ...Steamsteamappsusernameherehalf-life.gcf
To unpack you need GfcScape which can be found in the "downloads" section.

1. First you right-click on the little Steam icon on your taskbar, then click "exit"
2. Then bootup GfcScape and open up half-life.gcf.
3. You should get a folder called "valve" in the file browser in GfcScape, click the expand button.
4. Select the "sound" folder, and while your at it I would reccomend grabbing "models" too(you need to select and extract each separately).
5. Right click and click extract, browse to your "valve" directory.
6. After it has extracted all your files go ahead and boot up steam again.

In the end the files should be in the same place as if your "half-life" directory was the "root" file in the .gcf.

For WON it should be something like ...Seirrahalf-lifevalvepak0.pak
To unpack you need PakScape, which is in the same place as GfcScape.

1. I imagine the process should be the same as if it was a .gcf, but I can't be for sure seeing as I use Steam and haven't messed with .pak files in forever.

Also, don't worry about asking questions, thats kinda the point of The Snarkpit in the first place. Realy the only things to avoid is demanding answers, or ridiculing other people new to half-life. Besides that you should be fine.

Good luck in your further endeavors, and if I haven't been clear anywhere please tell me and I'll try again.

Sorry I didn't know that I can't use backwacks in my posts seeing as they got automatically removed. Anyway,

For Steam it should be ...Steam/steamapps/usernamehere/half-life.gcf

For WON it should be something like ...Seirra/half-life/valve/pak0.pak

Yeah, I've wasted hours listening to sounds before, even when I knew exactly what I was looking for when I started.

Anyway, glad I could help. Good luck with whatever you're working on, and feel free to ask if something comes up.

I suppose, but I don't see the benefit of having all your sounds in the WC directory, and most likely what will happen is that you will browse to and select one of those sounds and unless the person that downloads your map has the same WC directory with sounds they will get errors when playing your map.
Also, no if you have a "sound" folder in your WC directory it will not play sounds in the editior. I'm 98% sure this only works for sprites and models. But if you set your "Mod directory" for half-life to "...Steam/steamapps/usernamehere/half-life/valve" it should render sprites and models in the editior if they are extracted.
