Does anyone know why I have to have the Half-Life CD in order to run the game, because on my old computer I was able to play HL without using a CD?

Thanks.

I recall that unpatched, fresh off the CD HL required that the CD be in the drive to play music (you could copy the music from CD to the sounds folder in your HL game folder). Later on with the patches they didn't require that you have the CD in the drive.

I would suggest to activate your copy of HL on steam and download it. If you don't want to deal with steam, then you might be able to find the "big" half life patch (that included Riocet mod). I think this may be it:

However the WON servers have been down for quite some time, so you wouldn't be able to play DM online.

Not too sure though. It's been a while since I've played HL1 original engine. The steam version is 500% more stable, and comes with DirectX rendering.

Also for the future, questions like this belong in the editing boards.

Actually I just installed Blue Shift and I installed the patch that came with it and now I do not need the disc anymore.

(I figured it didn't relate to editing...that's why I put it here for) Thanks.
