I've had them go corrupt...
You're missing the point though Cass. You HAVE to use the .map file in order to compile. His problem is that it does not export properly.

Yea, but I don't think you have to actually VIEW the map even though you export it. No?

If the .map is just fine you should be able to compile properly. Can you? If you can I'm very confused as to what your problem is. no i cannot compile |
I was reading through the thread again, and I saw this.
Post your compile log please
The whole log.
PS: Don't leave out anything because you feel it's insignificant.

The problem is that Hammer isn't reading my MAP files correctly and causes errors. |
so take all traces of hammer out, and im not saying control panel add/remove programs, delete the whole folder in c (or what ever drive you have), but make sure you create a copy of all your work and save it somewhere else, then see what happens it really doesnt take that much time to do.....
Edit: just thought of it, maybe you have a corrupt .fgd ........

Yeah, because that takes care of the registry entries... (which by the way, have a better chance of being removed if you use the uninstall that comes with hammer.) [addsig]

The only thing I can see is that there's a problem with the fgd :/ Get an older one or a newer one and try again.

One of your brush entities has no solid brushes. Give it a non-clip, non-origin brush.

| Sorry but that is not my problem. I made a test map and all I made was a block. I exported it to a MAP file and opened it up and got the same error. |
It "might" be the FGD.

PROBLEM SOLVED!!!!
I finally figured out my problem. I can now
compile my maps. I simply reinstalled DoD into the Sierra/Half Life
folder and resetup Hammer to the Half Life directory so that it doesn't
run through steam and now I can look at the MAP file with no problems.
[Edit - this has been deemed the solution to this problem, as this thread has dragged on far too long

you are using ZHLT-MHLT?
ive seen so many people getting huge compile errors simply because they were still compiling with qtools.
batch compiler?
these things are your holy grail in mapping. only one i can think of is nems batch compiler. google for it.
btw, i find it easier to avoid errors by simply mapping in WON half life and just moving my map to steam when its done.
of course these are just the really obvious questions, and you should be able to say "yes" to both of them.

1) hammer/WC is a very stable program, if you have wierd errors, look OUTSIDE the editor for the root cause. chances are very high, you have screwed up something, somewhere else!
2) .maps do NOT cause mapping issues, if you get an error while loading a .map into hammer, the error was ALREADY PRESENT... in my 5 years of mapping experience, i have yet to see a .map cause an error.. people have claimed it has, but upon further research, it usually boiled down to the .map saving their ass.. most errors caught by a loading of a .map or the dreaded vertex manipulation errors.. depend on the .map, it will eventually save your ass.
new people, if you have issues with your editor, try loading a map, one you can confirm is errorless, and at least from another mod to narrow down the options..
one last issue to resolve now.. somehow the guy who solved this must get credit, or the database search will be unable to locate it next time... fix this last issue please.

Um I guess the credit should go to me then for finding out the problem on my own. I still appreciate all the help you guys gave me. I had been dealing with this problem for two weeks now and I had narrowed the problem down to an issue with Hammer reading a MAP file that was produced using steam settings.http://www.snarkpit.com/editing.php?page=tutorials&game=HL&id=59
So I tried many things to fix this but failed. So finally in a chance of luck when steam screwed up on me yesterday I reinstalled steam but this time instead of installing Day of Defeat through Steam I downloaded 3.0 off of FileFront and then installed it into my Half Life directory. Then set up Hammer and used these settings.http://www.dodmaps.com/public/articles/tutorials/tutorial01_04/gameconfig.jpg
Oh hope this will solve the problem for future mappers.
