I don't think they can, as far as I can see that is using two entitys on one thing which I don't think can be done in HL[1].

Doesn't sound plausible for HL1 to have a turret on a train of any kind, simply because of the entity difference.
But I could be wrong ... take a look at the func_train, turret, and Gollum's GMDM tutorials for an especially advanced train.
But I strongly doubt it. Try getting creative about it and I'm sure you can find a compromise between what you want to do and what you're able to do.
EDIT: Damn post time differences. [addsig]

you cannot tie any entity that fires rounds with a moving entity..
but, i have always wondered this, would it be feasible, to put a machine gun on a func_door and lift it to a new location?

You can do it in the Spirit Half-Life modification, apparently, which is how Gollum would have achieved it. http://spirit.valve-erc.com/

Sven Coop allows it to -- there was an entity kept out of the 3.1 version because he hadn't be perfected. It is a "set origin" entity, which can attach, say, a turret gun to a gonarch

Strictly speaking, I could have created a limited version of my boulder effect without using Spirit. To do this, you just need an eye for illusion; smoke and mirrors, you might say.
But the Spirit version is so much classier ![]()
For working gun turrets, however, you MUST use Spirit or a mod. with similar features. The func_tank entity, along with most other entities, is not designed to move.

Thankfully with HL2 you can link them together, with a phys_constraint entity I believe
