The countermap site only contains a small collection of custom stuff - I recommend the joesmoe and mikezilla wads.
Steam's use of the compressed cache files is very irritating, especially without some sort of extractor/explorer program. Valve really should think about writing one, so that map makers and modders aren't put in such a spot. Til then - back up files! And you really are silly to decide to let Steam clean up your old stuff for you - I had Steam move it but let me delete the other stuff in my own time thankyouverymuch.
