Prefabs Eh?

Are They Just For Lazy People Or For People Who Cant Make The Object Them Selves?

What Do U Think?

Sometimes can be useful to salvage bits and bobs from - but they're either overused, or just plain ugly and do absolutely nothing for originality. [addsig]

I Think Sentences Using This Form Of Capitalisation Look Stupid.

And prefabs have their place, but using them en masse kinda negates the point of mapping.

I Think That Few Posts Are Deserving Of The Capitalisation That Is Normally Betstowed Only Upon Book Titles And Acronyms.

I also think it's a pain in the arse to type, so I can't see why you bothered

Aaaaanyway. The prefab system can be used in all sorts of ways - as a mapper, you can create prefab architecture or entity setups, which sometimes saves work. You can also use it to benefit from other people's creations, so long as you credit them!

Just don't delude yourself into thinking that stuffing a dull level full of prefab objects will make it good.

Yes....beware uniform rows of bookcases, with 2 wonky books (i'm just guessing....it's been a long time since I was a prefab crazy whore ) and the rest perfectly stacked [addsig]

prefabs, should be used as teaching tools.. not as a main event.. [addsig]

isn't that the same thing?

I only use one prefab, and that's Yak Fighter's Cargo Truck. Anything else I make myself.

not really if ur lazy it doesnt mean that u cant make the object but ur just cant be bothered.

ive used a couple of prefabs but not to the extent where the whole map is made of other peeps work.

wat do u mean by that, are you saying that you shouldnt put prefabs in your map, only to use them to teach yourself how to make the object?

Prefabs are useful for mappers who want some cool system that they cant work out how to make themself, but there again, people like to see what others can make, and not be bothered to wait for a whole map to be made, but they are better just to be there and for you to think "is that possible" and "how good a job did they make?"

I have made the odd prefab, but i prefer to make my own stuff

the prefab system is a really usefull tool. whenever I'm making a map, and I find myself constructing somthing that might be usefull in the future, I perfect it and make a prefab out of it, so that I can use it in other projects.

I've never used anyone elses though.

i agree entirely with TB. i dont see the point of spending hours making something only to be used once if it can be used again. the very 1st map i made had a red door in it. a func_door_rotating, btw, not one of those pi**y sliding ones. anyway, was i pissed when i found out i didn't need to have made it three times, and that i could have made it into a prefab. anyway, i recovered from that with a lesson well learned and now i've got a small collections of bits and pieces that i occasionally use. (including the red door )

i did go through a spell of dl'ing other peoples prefabs, but i found that in genaral they were pretty poor. one or two of them were really well made though, like this one. i reckon no map can be without it, but tbh, i think i'd rather make my own version.

Prefabs can be very useful..not everybody is a hard core mapper sometimes you might have an idea of what you want in a map but you just can't seem to make it work right but maybe somebody else has..its not being lazy its being resourceful.

every map, every hall, everyTHING i have made of value is in .ol format and saved..

i think only a fool would not save them so... they require much less room.

That is a good point, but I've always found it harder to search for what I want than to make it myself

I make my stuff myself...brush-wise. Working on modelling which would exponentially help me out as well. Technically those are prefabs...but not the same. Personally all the prefabs I've seen bar 1 or 2 could easily be a tutorial, since with the smalle exception can be way the hell more efficient and also look better in your map if you create it yourself.
