Oh God, that one's a pain in the arse

As I remember, this is often caused by lots of complex geometry in the same area. Try simplifying or (temporarily) deleting complex rockwork etc.

This error has caused me to completely remove or remake rockwork in the past.

The following site gives some good details about the error and how to fix it.

http://www.slackiller.com/tommy14/errors.htm#numplanes

However, in my personal experience the cause has always been some sort of leak.

From that I would guess that you have a leak. If you fix the leak, the error will very probably go away. Yes, I know its difficult to find the leak since no pointfile is generated (this error occurs before leaks are checked for), but if you fix the leak the error inevitably goes away.

Either that, or your map is horribly complicated, but if that is the case you probably should have gotten some OTHER error before this such as max_map_planes or somesuch.

Oh heh i was wondering how you guys got spiffy colors on your posts (-:

And also what gollum said is another probable possibility.

I get this error a lot in my own maps. Triangle geometry should rarely be the source of this problem, unless you manipulated the brushes strangely or done something else strange. Also be aware that the number it spits out is usually meaningless. I think.

There are several possibilities for the cause:

  • Messed up brush shapes that are too unorthodox/complicated. Simplify the geometry a bit.
  • At/Over the "Planes" limit for a BSP. Organize your geometry better to bring planes down or use that XP Cagey tool.
  • At/Over the "Leaves" limit for a BSP. Leaves are the pieces CSG/BSP chop your map up into. Brush entities greatly contribute to the leaves limit, as they tend to overlap several leaves themselves. The solution to this problem is to convert brushes to World or reorganize the map to minimize leaves.

i remember an error very like that, that was caused by a manhole cover that had been clipped to as near perfect a circle as could be. in effect it was a cylinder with more than 32 sides, which proved to be a bad thing. something about one plane (either the top or bottom face of the cover) has more than 32 edges.

What the crap? I assumed everyone used Google. What kind of fly-by-night search engine is this?

is it really important?

i use google, jeeves, yahoo, anything it takes to get what i need.. it just depends on what i click on first i reckon...

i assume the answers are all the same, as long as they are correct answers :/

chances are real good, that google uses the same search options, i dunno, and don't want to.

when i lived in conway, i went thru there about 10 times a year, but from jonesboro its out of route ant i havent been thru there in 3 years

but i will holler if i can swing thru that way.. i do go to tulsa every once in a while for a bus

FOR ANYONE WANTING TO CREATE OBJECTS OF THE 32 SIDED VARIETY.

i had errors galore attempting to create Double_Trouble.

i found out that HL royally hates these objects

it didnt matter if they were columns, or arches, it glitched on me

what i did discover tho was, if you made them in 1/2, or 1/4's it would work just fine, so if you needed a 360* circle, make it that way and you will be fine. if need be group them for ease of movement, but be sure they are not one piece and it will compile.

/my 2 cents

Well at least all they do here is get a little side tracked.. prefab land you would of been attacked, slanderd, and called stupid..

These peeps here seem to help more, and are more constructive.

I know both sites have alot of the same people on them.. but for some reason here its more friendly & helpful.

As for the error.. U know I have no clue.. =) lol but we'll get it whooped up on sweetness.
