I'm getting really frustrated/desperate now.

here's the info: I have a music loop Borg made for my map; it's 48 seconds, 176kbps 22kHz, which comes to about 1mb. Borg looped it, and it played fine both in beta 18 of the map, and in a test map I made.

so the loops seems fine.

however, the ambient generic wasn't changed between betas or anything. also, the ambient generic WILL play OTHER .wavs, I just can't get it to play that one.

so the entity seems fine.

I was thinking the filesize of the loop was the problem, but before I had a chance to make the shorter loop the filesize was like 3mb and it played fine!

I even tried putting the ambient_generic in other places in the map; making a new entity; and starting it off, and trigger_auto'ing it. No luck.

(fyi, this will extract to the 'action' directory; manually pop it in the valve one if you don't have AHL)

and here is the room where the music is supposed to play. the ambient_generic is just above and to the left of the tree, and set to a 'large' radius.

Any help would be appreciated. Next I'm going to try reformatting the actual .wav file. The other idea I have is to copy/paste the whole map into a new map file, since Hammer is an evil bitch and all. This is one of the last things I need to fix before finishing up the map, it's so frustrating!!

Hmm, i recall reading at one point that wavs needed to be 11 kHz, however this was many moon ago. May be worth a shot.

mine was 8 in double_trouble..

i got error messages, but it played anyways, i used gollums prefab to run it successfully

Go find an ambient_generic that you know works from one of your previous maps.

Copy and paste it into your current map.

Set it's properties up like ya want..just rename your old one to the current one's properties.

It will work.  I've been using the same ambient_generic over and over and it hasn't failed me yet.

Also, the wav should be 11.025 8bit mono, right?

11 or 22 is standard I believe. 22 is 'high quality' for half-life. I have never had a problem using either.

changing it the 11 isn't really an option, as music sounds horrible at that quality.

Using the 22.0 wav will not disrupt the map, but it will give you an error message in console...something about format not supported...

oh, I'm sorry- I was rounding off the numbers. it's 22.050, double the low-quality 11.025. still 8bit mono, though.

anyway.... it's FIXED. I opened the wav in sound recorder, 'converted' it to the 22.050 8bit mono format (which supposedly it already was). Then I used a little hack program to add the sound loop like usual. and now IT WORKS!

I'm not sure what the deal was... maybe borg's formatting of it was a little off somehow.

sorry to have wasted everyone's time, I should have tried this before bugging you all. yet the old loop worked in another map.... so I thought it was fine... ug.

I am in the last stages of finishing this map up, along with retexturing ahl_monorail for BulletBait.... if I were to upload new betas, would you guys like to give them a quick once-over for me? I don't have time for any major reworking, but you guys always find the bugs, etc.
