I kinda like it, Have a few suggestions if you dont mind NIB.
Change the color of the glow to a BLUE or WHITE, or be fun and try the orange in the beak or around the eye as the glow color.
As for the bleed of the glow, you can make the glow effect smaller, or try to trim it.
The Bevel, you can also make smaller and more defined.. as well as address the colors used on it. Maybe make the background a bit larger so the bird does not over take the side...
But really man, I do like your idea and work on this version.. its really cool.

EDIT: ya know what would be fun.. is to add a faint reflection of the leaping Snark in the birds eye.. not overly noticeable, but there as an easter egg. =)

Yesterday I quickly added some effects to see what looks cool and what does not etc, but that was before you replied on this topic.

Actually I wanted to make it be special etc but oh well. Probably means I should finish my avatar before I've reached my 501th post. (like as a reward)

I like the bird but I don't really like the beveled edges, the text and all three backgrounds that said the last background looks alright.
Regarding the text, unless you find a really cool font and get the formula for the colours, glow and outline right, I think you need to find a more sophisticated way to incorporate the text because it looks really n00by just overlaid like that.
With the background I think you should just keep it simple but elegant.

The Last One I like the most. Maybe not glow the LETTERS.. You have always been the big NIB letters guy on your avatar and so I understand why you want to stick with it.
Maybe try a new font as suggested above, and some effects. The bevel should be reduced as well on the background to a 1 or 2.
But yeah I think your on the right track.. and CONGRATS ON 500 POST!

Hmm I think it's the fact that it feels like the text should be at the bottom and small like a caption for an image but instead it takes up half the avatar space and attracts a lot of attention.
So I think what you need to do is either make the text more of a feature in itself by making it more fancy/stylish or find a different way to incorporate the text in the avatar eg there's a billboard in the background on a slight angle that says "NIB". Me personally I would probably just scrap the text all together and focus on the bird.

I agree about the font change. Here you see this nice anime-ish bird all shaded and innocent-looking, then you see some military stencil sprayed text. Seems like some kind of disconnect there. The font style, doesn't really complement the image IMO.
About the background.... If the bird is going to be an abstraction of a real bird, then he background should be an abstraction. Simply blurring the heck out of some photograph doesn't make for a good background here, because it looks like an afterthought. You would be better off leaving it transparent, and having it just be the bird and text. On the flip side though, I would totally make some kind of sunburst background where it's off-centered. That way, you get these bold cycle of colors framing the already cartoonish bird and cartoonish text. -Would make for a matching arrangement methinks!
