I haven't really worked with maya, but I have had MUCH experience modeling high poly stuff in 3Ds Max, which uses the same basic tools as maya.
I assume you are modeling a low poly mesh, and using some sort of surface-subdivision method, to smooth it out. Mastering this method of modeling, is very tricky. Because of the way the smoothing works, it is easy to have your models look very lumpy at first (mine did), until you understand how to shape your low-poly mesh to create the detail you want in the high poly.
I don't really know what specific tips to give you, because I'm not familiar with Maya. I would suggest playing around with the details more, like the nose, eyes, lips, and learn how to control you high poly mesh, with the low poly undermesh. Use reference, and try to define the features as best you can. * ALWAYS USE REFERENCE if possible* sorry, can't state that enough.
Also. It looks like that smooth is at least 2 to 3 iterations, which is going to give you an immense poly count. Most modelers first instinct when using smoothing tools, is to bump up the iterations real high, to get things nice and smooth. This is natural, but wrong. Try to capture the form of your subject, as best you can with only 1 iteration of smoothing. This will force you to pay more attention to the actual shapes you are creating with the undermesh, and will also be less strain on your machine.
Things are looking good Ferrett, and I look forward to seeing this progress.

| Orph, your picture looks distinctly like a Northern native American... didn't the Mayans live in the southern continent (and looked very different to the Sioux/Apache etc etc tribes - VERY different) sorry if i seem arrogant quoting American history at Americans, but im pretty sure of it.. all i seek to do for others is educate |
no, you are correct, as i said, i was the one confused.. not about Indians, but about the word "Maya"
it was quite a while before i actually remembered the modeling programs name.. when i posted my first reply, it was with the intent of people, not programs..
sorry, was my bad.
