One thing I keep telling myself, is that I need to focus more on concepting/drawing environments. I have done more characters/creatures, than I have done environments; which seems strange as concepting environments would obviously go hand in hand with mapping. I guess it's the fact that perspective drawing takes a little more thought and organization, which conflicts with my natural tendancy to make a mess right away, then pick at it till it looks good. I found that using the line tool and setting up a few paths in photoshop, were essential.

Anyway, in an attempt to push myself, I have been working on this pic. Possibly a HL2 map? who knows.

from what i have seen, HL2 can handle it easilly... in fact, this thing looks smallish TBH.

nice pic though..

Quite a cool pic! Wish I could do that. Pretty ugly conveyor belt/wooden slat pathway in the foreground though...

How about that's the first HL2 competition? See who can "interpret" that concept art in the best way?

Nice concept though. I agree with Lep - that wooden conveyor belt seems out of place, a bit too curvy and such compared to all the semi-angular mechanical stuff.

The foreground converyor belt looks odd, as the others said, and I think the majority of the ground seems flat and under-developed. Other than that this is a wonderful piece of art, certainly on par with any piece of environmental concept art I've come across

I didn't think of it as a conveyor belt ... more like a triangulated ramp for round objects .... that would explain the posts beneath it. [addsig]

lol...ok, unanimous 'boo' for the conveyer. Like the rest of my art/life it's still in the development process. I plan on doing more with the ground, and walkway, I just don't really know what yet. Think I'll let it bake a little longer, and finish up the frog in the meantime.

out in the western US, they have similar looking objects that bring mountain water down to desert climes..

reno and vegas both employ such methods.

Creative, Crono, but no... it was suppossed to be some type of conveyer. In hindsight, however, why the hell would a conveyer snake around like that?

with the dry climate appearance of the picture, i believe my idea could be incorporated master finger.. [addsig]

The pic reminds me of "Lud" for those of you familiar with the quest for The Dark Tower

I like it allot. keep it up

I don't really contribute to the art forum since I'm not a 2D artist, but I love seeing what you guys produce.

--------

There, see my 1337 1-D art all must bow down in praise of it! or maybe just criticize it because I should have used one more or less hyphens.

I did post a model once in the deep dark past, but I have no time for that sort of thing anymore. Maybe when I finish my book I'll post a portion of that. I don't know what that would be; maybe 25-D art with none of them being spatial

Maybe it should be that any humongo maps that some dippy mappers made (I wonder whoo hmmmmmmm ???) that HL couldn't handle, should be sent in to HL2 for their review

Hmm... Art... Sketching... brush pens... things I haven't touched in a looonngggg timmeeee

Creative?
But, that's what I thought it was

Looks good though.

Maybe replace it with some pipes partially in the dirt, or something. [addsig]

the conveyor belt looks odd because all the slats almost go in the opposite direction in which due to perspective they are supposed to go.

Do I need to write a tutorial on perspective? lol

http://ferret.hl-nightwatch.net/traditionalart.php?tart2=penperspective

Not much but each line except for a few exploding debris is plotted to horizon line and vanishing points. Uses 3 point perspective with one 1 point so I keep withint the lame boundaries of the assignment.

God, that looks like a perspective nightmare, Ferret! Good job on that. Show us more!

I learned the technical aspects of perspective years ago, where I actually drew out the horizon lines, and vanishing points. Now I kinda just feel my way through it (lazy). You're right though, looking at it, some of the slats do seem off. I have a feeling mr. conveyer was gonna get replaced anyway

actually, using that technique (which is actually the best technique we have) produces skewed effects. It distorts things that are fairly close and rather far away, at least for 1 and 2 point perspectives, which are suppose to look normal, anything higher is obviously suppose to distort the image (4 point is cool ... but a pain in the ass).
