I am once again stuck in Denver, this time due to a major snow storm. They shut the interstate down.

Anywho's, I figure that I am wasting an opertunity of a lifetime. In my travels I see some extremely interesting mapping examples. It finally dawned upon me that I should be taking pics of these things and posting them for people to draw inspiration on.

Sadly, since I am not at home yet, it will have to wait, but it is not stopping anyone else from borrowing this thread for the same purpose.

Throughout snarkpits history, people have posted some interesting things, but sadly they are all lost in the depths of the forums, prolly even lost to preceeding versions as well.

I will upload the screens as soon as I get home, but feel free to borrow this thread for the same purpose.

please try to keep it as on topic as possible.

thanx, Orph

On my camera presently, I have an abandoned mine, or whatever the buildings are called for such.

and a demolished building.

both are most definately mapping material, sadly, i had to take the pics from the roadside. I did use telephoto, and semi-high resolution (2.3MP) so you guys will have a hefty download, but you can also zoom in once you get the images on your PC's

with 2.3mp, you should not get much blurring.

I am not real keen on this thread being placed within the "Art" forum.. I was informed last time that I am not smart enough to recognize art. If taking a picture with a camera qualifies, why was the Hoover Dam and Grand Canyon not moved as well?

As I stated earlier, these pictures are very large, they were made that way deliberately to attempt to retain some clarity due to the distances involved. If the download is to large, I can get you a smaller file, but cannot guarantee the image won't blur on you when you zoom in.

Photography has the potential to be art, but isn't necessarily artistic by default (eg. just taking a picture of a building isn't "art" in most people's eyes). I dunno who moved the thread, but in my opinion it has the potential to turn into an artistic thread, or a general thread, depending on the style of photographs people post. I guess the general idea is for it to be a reference library of sorts. Either way, it is less likely to be drowned out by other posts if its in the art forum, so I don't think its really a negative thing for it to have been moved here.

Since landscapes are included, I thought I'd share this one (87.94 KB). Taken in Cornwall the other week, it's pretty bland but I just liked the contrast between the sky and sand. Not exactly a useful mapping resource, but just a photo! smiley

true, and not so true.

the general forum also has the most members using it. quite honestly, i hardly ever even look in the arts forum anymore, and notice few others do either.

perhaps since its my thread, it will bring others here to reply. *shrugs*

I have been meaning to ask, but keep forgetting.

As most of you have seen, some of the vista's in my pictures are truly magnificent. Would anyone be interested in some pictures to be made into new sky boxes?

If so, please define the criteria in doing such IE preferred resolutions (1.2,3.2 5.0..etc..etc), types of terrain, times of day, times of year, angles of shot taken..

post shots of the north, east, west, and south, line up the bottom of the shot a few inches under the horizon line so you get alot of sky, then take a shot looking strait up. If you can a wide angle lens would work best for that last shot.

I'd like to see a clear sunny day and a bright over cast. Also a clear night with a full moon would be cool. I'll try and photoshop those all together and make them into a sky box if you post them.

ummm.... 3 should be more than enough, I think the sky box pics are only 1024x1024. So I would need a source image around 2000x2000 pixles (so I can shrink it down and cover up any mistakes)

Warning Large File Size:

Eons ago I told members here that I had a sea shell with a religious image on it. I personally see it, in spite of my non-religious background. I see the image others claim to be of religious importance anyways. Some want to see it with religious importance so much that they have offered to buy it.

you decide what you wanna see.

I say sell it to the suckers, even though it bears vague resemblance to medieval white-man's portrayal of Jesus :P
