I've always used 3D Studio MAX and G-Max (Which is free and does the job well in my opinion) so just from my own experience, I prefer those over Milkshape, Maya, and Lightwave. Of course, it's all personal preference. I suggest trying them all out till you find one you're comfortable using.

XSI is a viable option. IT's a good program, don't get me wrong, with lots of tutorials, it's just annoying a lot. I however, got Lightwave for *cough*less than the list price*cough* and it's really good, but can't extract the right files.

Since XSI is the valve official modeling program, I'd say give it ago. However, almost all the modeling programs are the same. They all do the same thing. It's not like one will magically make you great. Pick one and learn it inside and out.
