I'm trying to create that generic glassy logo effect that you get in backgrounds from time to time. I'm using the GIMP at the moment, but will soon have photoshop. I basically want to change something like this:
image
Into something like this.

I've tried using multiple layers slightly mis-aligned so that it appears vaguely 3d, but it looks diabolical. Any ideas how?

Perhaps you could try to model the logo using a 3D modelling program. Here's a little somethings I felt like doing when I saw that deviant art pic:

How you do that? It's sweet!

well, my guess would be - 3ds max and 2D logo to 3D logo creation. You load the image to one viewport, and start dragging lines all around it. Then you bevel it and add lightning etc and you're done.

Damnit that's cool. Better go and get 3dsmax then. Oh, btw, you might want to use that image sparingly. It's an outline of a fan cover I got off ebuyer, so there's probably a tonne of copyright stuff with it.

Just like Madedog said, I made it using 3ds max 6 and rendered it using mental ray. You can download a 30 day trial of 3ds max 7 from their website: http://www4.discreet.com/3dsmax/

Well, with what little experience I have of photoshop, it's quite easy to create a (very) simple-looking 3D effect by simply duplicating the layer to create a sort of "shadow".

I got this when playing around with your logo:

image

I've just played around with the Transform -> Distort tool and some gradient overlays.
I know it's pretty ugly, but it might give you an idea.

I came for the great service - but I stay for the extra leg space. ZombieLoffe.

You can do the exact same thing in Blender 3D, and Blender is free. I was thinking of doing the same thing with my avatar.

Heh. parakeet if that cube confuses you then just delete it. I'm currently modeling a RK-62 with Blender, but all in all I'm in a deep love and hate relationship with that program. It feels as if I'd forgotten everything about 3D modeling I had learned so far.

I dunno about HL2. Perhaps you can, but not directly. For blender tutorials check the http://www.blender.org It's full of 'em.

Sorry to ressurrect a dead topic, but I need a bit more help.

I've got 3ds max and I'm getting there with learning the various bits and pieces. However, a lot of tutorials I've found refer to materials from the library "3dsmax.mat". Anyone know where it is? I don't seem to have it/can't find it.

I think those materials are installed separately from the program itself. You might have gotten your hands on a copy without these materials included, or perhaps you just haven't installed them.

Could you post a link to one of those tutorials, please?

I just find it amusing you're concerned about copying an image, but then immediately illegally download an application to further modify said image. How about some consistancy here.

Secondly:

The folder is titled "MatLibs"

Although if you can't find a material library file in a folder called "MatLibs" you got some other skills that best be learned first, such as basic application operation.

I've also never in my life, needed to open a MatLib. So I'm not sure what the tutorials are pursuading you to do exactly, but you can probably skip that part.

not to be offensive but you seem to be very critical lately... it kinda makes me curious on the percentage of these critical comments to be hypocritical ^_^.

oh well.. about blender , im loving it more and more just need to know , can it export to hl2? Or will i have to use another program to do that

Umm.. sorry for the apparent inconsistency. I actually haven't done anything illegal here. I haven't gone to the site suggested by Windows 98 or anything, since I only intend to use the program for this one logo. I'm just running the demo version, but I only recently installed it so I've got quite a few days left.

Secondly,

That's the problem. The file isn't in matlibs. I did check, and did a full system search for it just in case it was somewhere else. Thanks for the advice though. I'm sure it was meant constructively. <img src=" SRC="images/smiles/icon_smile.gif">

Anyway, here are the tutorials which refer at lest to materials within 3dsmax.mat. The second one in the list has a piccy with 3dsmax.mat at the top of the materials browser, so presumably that's the open library:

http://www.tutorialoutpost.com/count/200
http://www.tutorialoutpost.com/count/126

Thanks for the help so far guys. Any other suggestions - and where can I download this thing if it's seperate?

On the same page from which you downloaded the program itself (if you downloaded it from Discreet) you can also find:

3ds Max 7 Help Files & Tutorials
3ds Max 7 Architectural Materials
3ds Max 7 Tutorial Support Files
3ds Max 7 Additional Maps and Materials

I think you'll need to download and install
3ds Max 7 Architectural Materials if you want those materials, and perhaps 3ds Max 7 Additional Maps and Materials if you want some more.

I suggest you take a look at http://www.3dkingdom.org/
Quite a few good tutorials can be found there.
If you want to learn some basics, including how to create glass, this tutorial is a good one: http://www.3dkingdom.org/modules.php?op=modload&name=News&file=article&sid=579

Hope that helps <img src=" SRC="images/smiles/icon_smile.gif">
