The mod team I'm in are in desperate need at least one texture artist so I figured I'd give it a shot.

This is what I've got so far:

I want to make it look slightly slimy and make the white lines appear inset a bit. How could I go about that?

EDIT: Also, how do you "tile" textures so that they fit next to each other smoothly

to make it inset you would need to use the dodge and burn technique, by darkening or makin something lighter you define depth.

What is it supposed to be, exactly?

Is it supposed to tile, because I'm not sure it does just from looking at it. And I want to know too, what exactly is it?

I think its supposed to be a watery thing. Tbh most textures are photo based nowadays.

True, but where are you going to find stuff like that in real life?

Its a sort of blue radioactive gloop, and it really is a sort of "test texture".

There are many ways to "make it tile". There are two filters in the GIMP that do it for you(the other is fixer, but you'll need to do some minor tweaks after it. I can't remember the other ones name...) or use offset with half height and half width value and remove the odd lines with clone stamp tool or manually. I don't know how others do it, but that's my way...

Some images in this post have been automatically down-sized, click on them to view the full sized versions:

Always do it manually. Always. You will get better results, and have complete control over the texture.

Heres my strategy, assuming I'm working with a 512x512 texture:
1: copy the tex.
2: double teh canvas width and paste another copy in the blank space next to the first. Flatten the layers.
3: On each side of the "line", identify key "features" that you would like to continue, and use the clone tool to continue them into the other side. This is where the skill comes in, and you will get better as you do it more.
4: Create a new vertical guide at 512 px
5: Using the guide, and being zoomed in at 100%, select and copy about half of the modified copy, starting at the guide and going right.
6: Paste the copied part.
7: Turn off the base layer so that all you see is the copied part.
8: Move the copied part so that it is aligned to the left side.
9: Turn on all layers, flatten image, resize canvas back to the origional size.
10: Repeat the above steps to make it tile in the up/down direction.

Also, heres a photo reference I took the other day that you can use for making tiles:

i'm thinking you should make that into a tutorial maze , possibly with information at the bottom on what textures are easier or more difficult to make. something like that.

Hmmm, good idea. I've been thinking about making a texturing tutorial for a while now. When I get a bit more time I'll probably do that.
