So I'm making a model of a Mercedes-Benz S class w140

I wanted to post it up here, even though I don't have mu ht to show (started today). So I will update this thread as I progress, along the way I welcome comments and critisism. There really isn't anything to say right about now.

I don't intend for this to be in any game, but if it looks any good when it's done, I may lower the poly count and see if it can work in HL2. But, until then, it's going to be high-poly and aiming for realism.

I know two errors with the current progress shown below

1. I'm aware of that pinching on the bump of the hood
2. I'm aware of the depression in the middle of the hood

I was going to wait longer before starting the thread, but whaddya know, I didn't.

Feel free to ignore the thread now, but soon it'll get interesting... i hope.

This is the first render of the model;

and this is the actual car;

I think youre starting in the wrong direction of car modeling. It is much easier creating a full car from a box by subdividiing it down. Theres a tutorial somewhere on CGsociety, Ill see if I can find it.

Edit-
Lost and... Found. http://forums.cgsociety.org/showthread.php?t=156460&page=1&pp=15

There are different ways I'm sure, however this is the popular method on www.smcars.net, where I'm learning the techniques.

IMO, it's best to pick a method and just learn it through, which is what I'm doing. THanks for the link though.

I always start out with a plane wich i drag out and subdived. etc.

pepper design

Yer, get the scale right at first. Maybe you should build a really simple model of it, then put the pieces your building on top to make sure they are the right size.

I know they are the right size, I have blueprints set up around the model, and I align them to that. Once I sort out some minor issues I can finally get something better.

Well, I finally got a few more minutes to put towards modeling, so I updated a little bit. I sorted out all the problems with my mesh, bad polygon flow etc. and I continued the ridge of the hood down the side.

Hopefully I will soon be able to actuall get some more time to model.

Latest render. Still needs ton's of work on that new part, I know.

I know it disappears on the left side, but it's just because of a problem I'm experiencing with Max.

Thanks. It's going really slowly, since I coulnd't really find a good tutorial to set me in the right direction, so I'm basically self teaching myself the program while trying to model a car smiley

I'm just going to try and make every part as best I can. I'm on a forum right now edicated entirely to modeling cars, and I've been getting a lot of pointers from them. Hopefull it'll turn out okay.

On the plus side, it's a good way to learn a lot and develop your own techniques.

unfortunatly ... its also how you gain bad habits, each to his own though because you can definitly tune out your bad habits later. Tutorials tend to speed things up a bit but they can restrict what you learn , * as a random kung fu guy in a fighting game would say* Try to keep a balance between the yin and yang of Order and chaos ;p

Indeed. I've listed the way I've modeled a bit in answer to questions over at the car forums, and they've helped straighten me out. I think I'm on the right track for the most part.

The forums are Scratch Made Cars if you're interestd.

Its dissapearing on the left probably because faces on models are only viewed on 1 side usually... but anyway, looking good.

Yeah, I'm modeling with planes, so they're normally one sided. There is a way to get them 2-sided, but I can't find it. I've asked on the forums, awaiting reply.

you can set a back side in the material or in the plane menu (not sure where) but as far as I know it only draws a plane, you still cant select the back of the plane.

Mayhap the material editor, thanks Glass. I'll check it out and see what I can find.

Right click the object, go to properties and deselect "backface cull".
