I would have posted this image here: http://www.snarkpit.net/forums.php?forum=4&topic=4807&start=40

But its been more than 4 months and I'm not allowed to post in that thread.

So, I'll do it here instead. I was browsing the interlopers forum and I noticed that quite a few of the members put "userbars" in their sigs. DarkKiller was the first one to show me them, months ago, but I didn't realize how popular they were. I think they're pretty silly in general, but I decided to try to find a swimming userbar. I couldn't find one, but I did find a website where you can make your own userbars, ( http://userbarmaker.com ) so after some experimentation... I came up with this:

image

I had the picture of the Swedish Goggles on my computer, and I ended up googling a tutorial and learning how to make transparent images with photoshop (what can I say, I'm inexperienced when it comes to image editing). Then I used the handy website and viola, this is what I ended up with. I have to say, it looks pretty good and I didn't have to bother someone with photoshop skills to come up with it.

does this count as art?

Thats a damned passable recreation of a box of cigarettes Fishman.

Next time, move that damned model out of the frame so it won't distract others from your intent.

Saweet! I always wanted to build my own, but never had enough time/energy. One thing, though. It doesn't seem to have ailerons. Does that make the rudder it's only control surface? :S

rudder and elevator. the poor quality picture seems to hide the elevetor quite well, though. and probably some other, less desirable, facets, too.

Andrei, do you still have 1000lei notes in Romania? i checked out the value of one that i've had kicking around for a while, and it seems that you entire population should be millionaires.

No we don't. Anything under 10.000 lei (100,500,1000) is made out of metal.
We're all, indeed, (multi-)millionaires. But that's because a bottle of Coke is ~30.000 lei .

Wowa fishman, thats a nice plane there, though i dont recall any of the 109 versions have such a streamlined shape, especialy the k-4 was succesfull because of the engine. Oh well, just being nit picky as a plane freak here'

Excellent sketch there morph, reminds me of esscher.

Unforunately, my drafting instructor wasn't so fond of it.

you better count this as art. ^_^

this is pretty much my final for my 3d modeling class this quarter. was going to be final but.. well, the lights, the chair... and zazi.. dangit zazi. don't let him critique your stuff. he'll give you good suggestions you can't ignor.. anyway

it was originally made for an interview (got a 3ds job after three days actively using it. awesomeness!), but they had to change things and i no longer work for them. but i decided that i must continue modeling, so I took the sucky version i gave my boss and prettied it up for fun, then decided to make it my final. tadah. this is the first scene i've made with 3ds. (aside from my lame assignments and small personal things.. like a bottle, monitor, coffee table.. )

image image image image image

one of those suggestions zazi made was to put fish in the tank, the logo on the tank, and put a small garden under the dome, which i'm working on now. organic modeling and I don't get along real well, but we havn't given eachother much of a chance, so we'll see how that turns out.

Oh you bet we do. Doc Glass made an artistic rendition of doggy poo a while back and we just loved it. This is leagues better than poop. <img src=" SRC="images/smiles/rofl.gif">

uhhh havn't actually started. i was trying to make a tree earlier... that was a bad idea. i'll try the fish next perhaps, or do something simple and apply the "logo" to the tank. ^_^ seriously.. trees are hard.

The sofa looks wonderful, as does some of the rest of the furniture, and overall it looks pretty cool, but the detail just seems a tad too inconsistant to me. From the glorious sofa to the completely bare bones reception desk, is just a rather jarring jump. Great job learning max in such a short period of time though - I've spent more time with it than that with far less success <img src=" SRC="images/smiles/icon_smile.gif">

Yeah, I agree - that's some very nice stuff there. As Reno said, a little more attention to detail is needed to push this further. That last 20% of polish is sometimes the hardest to achieve, but ultimately what sets people above mediocrity (not that your stuff is mediocre).

Overall, I would say there are 2 simple, yet gigantic lessons any artist needs to REALLY LEARN, in order to really hit their potential.

A. Composition is key

B. Presentation is everything.

These may sound like fairly cliche statements, but they are so crucial and it's unbelievable how many good artists don't really grasp them. I have seen portfolios of designers at work, who obviously had experience and talent, but were overlooked on poor presentation alone. Also, I ahve seen some of the most AMAZING concept art made out of a few squiggly brush strokes and some blocky shapes, that impressed on composition alone.

So.. maybe think about ways you can present your environment in a more personal way. Right now it looks like a static setpiece. Allthough well modeled, it has very little 'life' and atmosphere. Think about this as a real place with some sense of story, and try to spice it up with more dramatic lighting, some atmospheric effects, little details that make it feel lived in....etc.

Anyway, very nice work. Thanks for sharing.

Oooh! Spread some papers across the countertop... model a phone, a computer, some pens etc and make it a true receptionists desk <img src=" SRC="images/smiles/icon_smile.gif">

Scuff up the floor a bit too maybe?

If its an office, its more than likely to have Styrofoam cups, used gum wrappers and perhaps a used condom packet lying about.

If its an older office, a cigarette ashtray would look cool.

Water coolers, copy machines, waste paper baskets, "IN and OUT" trays, type writers, paper for copy machines, coffee cups with company logo's, hat racks, clothes hangers on backs of doors, pictures from home, date planners or Rolodex, etc, etc.

well, i can't actually say what it was. that might be a violation of NDA. at the time i started the scene I wasn't under nda, but they didn't tell me exactly what it was (I think). But, of course, they told me what it was supposed to be later. I changed the logo, so I'm pretty sure that satisifies the NDA, since this was not created under it, and I didn't reveal the name of the place. I think I will make the garden, redo the chairs and call it finished.

Made this for someone in the HL2world forums. 420(rawr! reduced to 344!) faces right now (without the phone). I have no idea how good or bad that is. This is my first prop model (well, very nearly), but I think it's pretty optimized, though I admittedly am very new to modeling.

finished. I think. 430 something faces I think. Plus or minus 15 faces. Did it all in one day! Woohoo!
