All I know for sure is I was watching TV and told the wife, "Hey, I know a guy making that exact same train"
But dangit, I cannot remember when or in what show. I was dead tired from my last run.

Even though the image auto-updates I figured I'd repost it because it's on a different page.

Good idea.
That looks pretty awesome! What's it going to be used in? -I'm guessing a game of some sort eh?
-Is it just me or do I see image artifacts in the texture used (as if it was a really low-res photo-realistic texture)? Like on the magazine clip?
But if you're getting away with texturing this with just a 128x128px then I commend you. That looks really nice.

Not going to be used in anything unless somebody wants to take it and actually use it, the texture I've made myself [I'm terrible at texturing FYI] and it's 512x512, should have made it higher res but that would have meant more work.
The 'artifact' on the clip was probably just error while attempting to add dirt layers over the magazine or maybe even the camo [No weapon is perfectly spit shine regardless of how new it is] layer being added over top. Not sure.

I had a lot of spare time at work the past couple of nights, and I dislike sitting around doing absolutely nothing... so I'm apparently getting back into drawing.
This is the result:

It's a starship battle. More precisely, the Second Battle of Eden III -- a pivotal event in a sci-fi storyline I'm developing. Done entirely free-hand with a mechanical pencil (0.5mm) on generic printer paper.
Sorry Orph, I didn't want to compress it too much and ruin all the little details with compression artifacts.

Hi all. I don 't usually post anything in this thread, usually because I'm too shy about comments, but I'd like to get some feedback.
I'm wanting to get more into digital matte painting and 2D environment art, and have been experimenting with hand-drawn stuff scanned into the computer to figure out what my 'style' is, if I have one at all.
This is some stuff I've done this year in my free time:
"Crack"

"Reservoir"

"Moon Base"

All of these images started off with some kind of sketch on paper, and then that sketch develops into hard lines which I scan in to see what I feel like doing with it in Photoshop. I own an Intuos 3 Wacom tablet (6x8") I purchased for $300 back in 2007, and feel guilty about how little I've used it. So, now being done with school, this is my creative outlet when I get the motivation and time.
Which one do you guys like or dislike the most? What might you like/dislike about them?
Thanks!

Hi Riven,
My first thoughts of the first picture was, wow, that's interesting. I haven't often seen this type of art. First of all, the drawing is drawn seamless into the photo, so that's very well done. I like the drawing itself as well. Did you come up with some background story for the structure?
In the back in the middle, there's a few buildings, did you add those yourself? The reason I'm asking is because the building on the right looks half invisible. This might be just an optical illusion, but it did catch my attention. I also noticed that these buildings look more straight than the buildings on the far end, a little more on the left.
The second drawing I have nothing to say about other than it looks perfect to me. I like it a lot, and the rock formations in the background makes the drawing even more atmospheric.
I like the little details in the third drawing. If I had to choose one of the three drawings to be printed as a poster in my room, it wouldn't be this one because it doesn't feel as 'relaxing' as the other two, but again, the small details in this drawing is what makes it so good. The only real complaint I got here is that the stars seem to only appear above the structure, and not in the center of the drawing, but I'm not sure if this was intentional.
Please note that I'm just trying to be as critic as possible, coming from someone with barely any understanding of drawing!
Thank you for sharing your drawings, I really like your style and I hope to see more soon

Hey thanks for commenting Nib!
In regards to the first pic "Crack", the idea was to mimic those great environment artists and matte painters that can tell a story in an image. I'm not good at drawing people or even up close figures, so I like to draw environment scenes, and it makes a little hard for me to tell a story without some kind of human element. So I like to let people infer their own background story out of the image; if that image works well enough to do it.
The more I look at it, I see the crooked buildings in the corner, they should have been adjusted a bit more :P
About "Moon Base", -There probably should have been more stars between the structure and the planet in the center.
If you like the style of "Crack", I could definitely do more like that. It is black and white because that made it easier to blend all the different photos and drawing together. And it was good practice for me having not done that sort of thing very much. I didn't have to worry about color so much. I can definitely work on that a bit more. That's the only one that's truly a digital 'matte' painting since it used so many photos.
Thanks for the critique. It helps out a lot; keeps me motivated.

How did I not see this before?
My input: those are f-ing rad. Good job. I wish I could get my paints (real or digital) looking like that.

Nice ones Riven. "Reservoir" looks very Red Faction Guerrilla-esque.

Inspiration for Reservoir was taken from one of my favorite artist/architect: Lebbeus Woods. A lot of post war reconstruction/ fungus architecture. Very cool stuff.
