I'm trying to make a custom texture for L4D But once I drag my .tga file into Vtex.exe, it says "No config file for G:/Steam/Steamapps/Niborius/sourcesdk_content/left4dead/materialsrc/l4d_wegenbouw/cycleroad.tga

l4d_wegenbouw is the name of my custom folder, and cycleroad.tga is my texture.

And yes Aaron, I followed your tutorial too, but same result.

Accepted Answer
that usually doesent matter, the texture should still work.

i get this message every time.
i think what it is saying is that you diddnt have a text file with compile parameters with the texture.
but you only need one if you are making some kind of really special texture.

other than that you should check your directory left4dead/materials/l4d_wegenbouw and it should be there waiting for you to type up a vtf

on another note tho im not sure if anyone is different here but my l4d game is in Program Files/Steam/steamapps/COMMON/left 4 dead rather than Program Files/Steam/steamapps/USERNAME/...........

if this is true for others than you should be using the tools in that dir

Ok thanks for helping I'll check it later.
My Left 4 Dead folder is in the Common folder too. That's because it doesn't use any of the .GCF Files.

I didn't read most of this thread since I know nothing about Left 4 Dead but there are easier ways to make a texture (unless you have to use Vtex.exe for L4D).

You can download VTF Edit which is a nice vtf viewer and can convert textures between bmp/jpeg/png/tga and vtf.

If you have Photoshop than why not get the vtf plugin for Photoshop which makes creating vtf's quicker and easier and can do everything else VTF Edit can.

Yeah, I already got the VTF Plugin, but I didn't really know how the .vmt file really worked. But now I do, It's just some easy scripting.

Thanks guys!

sounds like you got it working Niborious? -Be sure to mark the post that helped you the most as the correct one (and therefore give the receiving donor some delicious snarkmarks!)

-As a side note, the vtf plugin does not work for Adobe Photoshop CS4. (nor CS3 -I think). However, it should still work for CS2.

-And yes warlord, the installed original L4D files are located under the 'common' folder for everyone. However, I think placing files under a similar folder structure within your 'username' directory might achieve the same effects like other Source games and their GCF files. I'm going to test this real quick... smiley

[EDIT]: -O.k. apparently, placing files in a similarly laid-out folder structure under your username folder will not replace the sounds of the game. I image the same is true for other content. But you most certainly can replace a sound under the common folder for L4D and it will recognize that.

Riven, I was about to do that but I couldn't find out how (It's probably very simple).
Now about the plugin: Actually I got it working for CS4, so I don't know why it is not working on your system?

It works for me and I have CS3.

Ok, well then it may be the fact that I'm using a 64 bit version of CS4? -I'll have to try it on my laptop and see if it works there as It still uses a 32 bit version of CS4.

-Ah, thanks for clarifying that aaron. smiley

@Niborius -do you see a box with a drop down list arrow next to the 'quote' button near every users post? It should say 'set answer' and you should be able to select the post that most helped you and set it as 'accepted'

Ehm.. No I'm not seeing that? Are you sure that feature isn't for moderators or admins only and forgot to enable it for members? (That's what I'm thinking)

I'm using the latest Firefox.

Edit: the slash buttons aren't working, why's that? smiley

Hmm, maybe so. smiley I assumed thread starters (in editing forums) would be able to see it to so that they could mark it on their own. I'll mention this to larchy.

-The slash marks were also taken out by larchy. He was having so much difficulty with them that he did away with them (as I understand it).

Assisted basically means 'helped' You can mark multiple responses as 'assisted' 'accepted' or 'incorrect' The user's who's posts received an 'accepted' setting will get 2 snarkmarks.

Ah I see. And I think that marking someone's post as "incorrect" means that his snarkmarks will be reduced?

no, It's not possible to earn negative snarkmarks. When we get the info page up, this will all be answered.
