You will have to convert the model.. Dont use MAYA so I am not sure the process, but with Blender they have a plugin that does that for you.

Save the model as an SMD, then use StudioMDL to convert the SMD to MDL and then it can be used in the HL engine.

StudioMDL is included in your SDK files. SourcesSDK/BIN/EP1/BIN/studioMDL.exe

I urge you to take a look at the Valve Developer Community: Link--> http://developer.valvesoftware.com/wiki/Main_Page

The most technical information is all archived there, even with advanced tutorials to do exactly what you want to do. Also, be sure to check out our links page (at the top) for other useful resources for mapping in Source.

Just an interesting point, Valve is using Modo now but I know nothing about Modo.

Not taking credit for this find someone else here on the pit pointed it out to me:

http://developer.valvesoftware.com/wiki/Propper

Read up, there are a lot of cool features. At the very least you can make the mdl file and decompile it and hand it over to an actual modeler to touch it up.
