Hammer can't find gameinfo.txt?

I tinkered with Hammer for HL2 a few days ago and I think I messed something up when I did the setup. Now when I open it, this is all I get

The program then closes. I tried simply uninstalling and reinstalling the SDK but the problem persists. Could someone give me some guidance, I'm not sure what exactly it's asking me to do.

in the 'search' I did I didn't include the error msg word-for-word, oops

actually, I just deleted the gamecfg.ini.... now I'll try setting it up following the tutorial like I should have to start

Sorry to dredge up an old post, but another possible solution is to run the game you are trying to "edit" in Hammer.

I just installed Steam on this laptop, but Hammer couldn't find gameinfo.txt for HL2DM. Looking in the path, sure enough it was missing. After I ran HL2DM for the first time, the file is now there; Hammer works now.
