Apologies if this has been covered but my search proved fruitless. I start hammer and go to tools > options. In the 'game configuration' tab the configuration is set to counter-strike. If I select halflife and press 'ok' nothing happens. Upon returning to the options, the configuration is reset. The apply option remains grey no matter what options I toggle or choose. However, most other settings stick after hitting 'ok'.

In options you aren't "turning on" a config by selecting it, you are just selecting it in order to change its settings while in the menu. If you want to make a Half-Life 2 map, you need to choose Half-Life 2 from the drop down list in the steam dialog for the source SDK, or from the popup dialog that you get if running hammer from a desktop shortcut.

And as Corona says in the other thread:

Well I'm half glad I'm not an idiot as I had that selected, and I'm half upset as that's not the problem.

Well, just take the easy way out and have one configuration!

I was going to do that but I was worried about losing the CSS hammer settings, which retrospectively seems quite stupid...

Ok it works, but it's far from a successful conclusion. Even if I go back and add CSS again, it still defaults to the first item on the list. If there was a way to edit the name of the configuration it'd be ok.

I'll leave this open for a bit and then mark the answer as right if no other solutions are found. Cheers Lep.

I'm having the same problem. Post up the solution if you find it.

I was orginally fooled as well. In tools->options, the one that appears to be the default has nothing to do with your current config or the default. The first in alphabetical order is selected here automatically.

What happens if you DON'T run Hammer from the SDK menu? Will it work then?

If you run hammer directly (not from the SDK menu), it gives you a little pop-up on running asking you to choose which configuration you want to use.

I think the was asking what happens for TwoKnives when he tries that, as opposed to what is meant to happen

Running hammer from the directory results in the same problem occuring. It's not really an issue for me anymore, as deleting the other configurations is perfect for my situation. If I find a solution I'll post it for the others. Cheers for the help.
