I've read the tutorial and saw how it explained the what "Sew"
(displacement mapping) does. Now, I have two displacement mapped faces
close to eachother with a small gap. I select both and hit Sew, yet
nothing happens. Eh?

Didn't that tutorial say you should not have a gap between the base
brushes of the displacement maps? Only when the base brushes of the
selected dismaps share an edge (wich must be the same length too), Sew
works.
Now you can also have, for example, two small dismaps and one large, where the two small ones both share an edge with the large one, and together the edges of the small ones have the same length as the edge of the large one. In this case, sewing would work also. So it's not completely limited to the actual brushes but to the actual selection.
