Anyone got any idea's how to create a waterfall. I know there were ones in HL deathmatch maps, but i havent seen any so far in HL2.

Maybe someone can give me to a link to an example? or suggest something.

Cheers.

P.s. Sorry for posting something so vague

Not sure how it would work with the new water that Source has, but I beleive it'd be related to using the func_conveyor setting.

Yeah, i assumed that it would use something like that. On the HL2 level on that hovercraft thing near the dam. I was sure they would have some kind of flowing water, but no. I'm more impressed with Far Cry's water, with the layered textures to create like lapping water on the beach.

The waterfall isnt integral to my map, but it would be still nice if i could get one working.

I suppose the next thing for a game engine to do is to make realistically simulated water. Now that would be awesome.

As far as your question is concerned, I don't think hl2 includes any kind of waterfall stuff. I reckon you'll have to do it via a custom texture. I think it would be possible to make a really convincing custom waterfall texture, but I don't know anyone capable of doing it :/

Hmm maybe i should e-mail Gabe Newel? .

I'm sure someone will create one and hopefully do a tutorial as well. Got too much to do on my map to be worrying about waterfalls anyway. Just wish i could get HL2 installed at work, dam company firewall.

Maybe you shouldn't until you've had more than a few weeks to learn and see if there is a way..?

From Steampowered.com support search:

Question

I want to move my Steam installation to a different disk or computer, how can I do this?

Answer

Steam must all be kept together, you won't be able to move only part of it.

Let's say you ran out of space on your C: disk and want to move Steam to your larger E: disk.

To successfully move Steam over to the E: drive you have to move:

C:Program FilesValveSteam <everything>
to
E:Program FilesValveSteam <everything>

Then you need to delete this file:

E:Program FilesValveSteamClientRegistry.blob

Any shortcuts to Steam on your desktop will need to be updated as well - you can just delete the old shortcut and drag and drop a shortcut (right-mouse button) for the moved Steam.exe on your desktop.

When you start Steam up it will do a short update, check the installation and re-create the blob file for the new location and you should be ready to play.

Same rules apply if you want to move your Steam install to a different computer, you'll have to use file sharing or burn CDs or DVDs with the content to accomplish the move.

If you use CDs or DVDs, be sure to make sure none of the Steam files become marked "Read Only" when you copy them off the CDs - all the Steam file need to be writeable.

Maybe this won't work if Steam can't connect from your workplace for authorization purposes (just requires Steam to logon as far as I know..). There's a way to setup an offline HL2 Steam setup, but that may not work because you're actually online... the info is at the Steampowered.com support web.

Hmm i'll give it a try. So what your saying is that it might be possible copy HL2 to another drive.But what about copying the installed game onto a dvd and shove it in on my harddrive at work.

I know there are a lot of people would be very happy if i could Get CS:Source working at work. By the way i'm a QA Technician so i'm allowed to play games at break.

I've thought of installing HL2 onto an old Harddrive, unlocking the files then bringing the HD to work. The firewall blocks any attempt to connect to Steam, trust me i've tried. There's offline mode, the only problem is i dont know how to turn off the internet connection here, other than yanking out the network cable at the back of my computer. I dont think everyone will appreciate doing this everytime they want to play. True i could use a cracked version but i would rather not do this if i have a choice.

Does anyone know anything about installing multiple copies of HL2 on one computer?

Sadly, waterfalls are made just like in HL1

I doubt you can make those brushes water either. They most likely wouldn't show up in game.

No, you cannot have 2 installations of HL2 on one computer. And you cannot install the same copy of HL2 on more then one computer. [addsig]

You could probably make water falls, but it would take a lot of work. You could use the cheapwater texture for the waterfall itself, then put a trigger_push inside, i dont think textures scroll at the moment, unless you code it in yourself, which i dont know how to do. Once you've made the water, you could put a bunch of sprites around the base of the waterfall, i know theres a good animated cloud model somewhere in there. You could use this as the base of the waterfall. It would take a lot of work but im sure its possible. You might need to make the water a model by yourself or something.

Waterfalls are harder than that. I've been trying to get a waterfall running for the last few days. Grr...

And yes, textures can scroll. The problem is that water looks like it only functions correctly when it is on the top of a polygon.

I've been working on a waterfall by way of scrolling textures & pushing. I need more experience with visual & sound effects to make it seem realistic though, partly why i registered here

reply to below: the thread is not dead, i will revive it when I have a bad ass waterfall to show off - >smiley

LOOK, just to end this bloody thread already do this:
1) Get a water texture in 32bit .tga and give it a name . In my case an_scrollwater and convert it to a .vtf.
2) Paste the following in it's VMT file and tweak it to your liking:

"Cloud"
{
"$basetexture" "haul/an_scrollwater"
"$cloudalphatexture" "shadertest/cloudalpha"
"$cloudscale" "[ 2.00 2.00 2.00 ]"
"$maskscale" "[ 1.00 1.00 1.00 ]"
"%tooltexture" "nature/cloud001c"
"Proxies"
{
"TextureScroll"
{
"texturescrollvar" "$baseTextureTransform"
"texturescrollrate" 0.45
"texturescrollangle" 0.05
}
}
}

Remember to change the path.
3) Make a waterfall out of brushes and wrap it in your new texture. Don't worry, it won't be orange in-game.
4) Add some stuff to the waterfall like env_steams to simulate shooting water particles and func_smokevolumes at the bottom of the fall to simulate small water particals floating in the air (like in reality).
5) You might want to tweak the texturing cause it appears differently in-game than it does in the editor. I'm still working on that smiley .
Now can this tired thread PLEASE die?

a) 32bit .tga is an image format.

b) it doesn't get any simpler.
