In the SDK documentation on compiling, I read this section:

  1. For Place compiled maps in this directory before running the game, enter the directory where the sample maps are stored.

    Example for Counter-Strike:

    C:Program FilesValveSteamSteamAppsusernamesourcesdkcstrike_sample_contentmaps

    Example for Half-Life 2:

    C:Program FilesValveSteamSteamAppsusernamesourcesdksdkcontentmaps

    Example for Half-Life 2 Deathmatch:

    C:Program FilesValveSteamSteamAppsusernamesourcesdkhl2mp_sample_contentmaps

  2. Press OK. Hammer is now configured for use.

-----

Why doesn't the documentation suggest to put the compiled .bsp file in the respective "map" directory. For example, HL2 maps should go directly into:

c:program filesvalvesteamsteamapps<username>hl2maps

I have configured my Hammer this way, and it seems to work fine.

Can anyone let me know whether I'm misunderstanding or mis-using something? I appreciate any input.

Hmm, well, maybe they're just trying to confuse you and/or simply haven't fixed it yet. I wouldn't know, I use Batch Compiler Isn't this sort of a rhetorical question? Sounds like you've already got it workin' 100%...

Not really sure, unless games can run maps in the sourcesdk directory... I think everyone else does what you do, so don't worry about it

Thanks everyone. The map *doesn't* run in the sourcedsk directory. I followed the SDK doc's first, and it didn't work. So I had to make the modification on my own, against the SDK advice. That's why I was a bit unnerved about my setup.

And the SDK also recommends to use the "game exe file" location in sdkcontent. That doesn't make any sense to me either. I changed it to my regular "half-life 2/hl2" directory, and it seems to work fine.
