Well I just got done reading the newbie tutorial for a door.

I'm confused on which tool the author used to cut the part of the brush out of the frame. I've tried using the "Clipping Tool" and I don't think the "Carve" option would work very well for something like that.

It is the clipping tool. The clipping tool has three different modes which let you cut off one side, the other, or both. Click the button to cycle between them.
