Ok i've been using the half life level editor for a couple of days,
have re-read all the introductory tutorials i can find as i'm trying to
become accustomed to editing levels again. One thing I can't remember
how to do is move around the world with the texture application tool
and keep the surfaces I had previously selected.
To clarify if i'm not coming through clearly, I'm trying to select
several faces for use with the displacement tool. I can't possibly see
all the faces I need to select at one time. Is there any trick that i'm
not aware of for selecting multiple faces in this sitution?
If i switch to the camera tool, all my face selection goes away.
Any help is appreciated in advance.

Select multiple faces by holding down CTRL and clicking on them with the texture application tool, and then navigate around in the 3D window simply by moving your mouse over it and using the keyboard to navigate (WSAD and/or the cursor keys). You don't need to ever use the camera tool, really, just keep the same single camera going through your map

No, you aren't missing anything. This is just one of the most annoying things about VHE 4.0. In the older versions the texture application window just stayed up until you were done with it.

pushing z will toggle the mouse camera motion. just like using
the camera tool except you push z instead of the mouse to rotate the
view. Its nice that its z too since its right by your pinky
